Ditch the MP5 handguard and look for a proper 53 handguard. Don’t be a savage

Has anyone used a direct thread can on their AP53? |

Has anyone used a direct thread can on their AP53? @HKH Are you using the stock locking doohicky with your SDN6? I bought a 4 prong mount to use mine, but then got confused about what (if any) locking thingy I needed. And yes, proper 53 handguard was on my list, but I stopped myself from spending any more money on this thing until I figure out if I actually like it. Right now I'm still on the fence, although I did recently shoot a 2G match with it and I don't think it fucked up my score as much as I was afraid it would. |

What I’ve got is the barrel of the 53, then the KAK taper adapter, then the factory AAC 51 tooth blackout flash hider. My SDN6 has the ratcheting locking mechanism if that’s what you’re asking. I just crank it down and it clicks and clicks till it cannot click any longer ![]() When I remove it I depress the mechanism on the can and unscrew it. Is that what you where asking? |

I was talking about locking piece in the gun, like these: https://rimcountrymfg.com/product/rcm-hk-style-locking-piece-3-58-deg-5-56-223-copy/ I'm going to assume from your response that you are using the stock piece, but let know if that is wrong. Drop the new recoil rod in and put the new stock on and then put the pin back in. It’s essentially what you do to disassemble the gun for cleaning. Except when reassembling you’re putting a new stock on. Gun quality Enforcement on YT and a bunch of others have videos. A word of caution especially with the MkE ones some fitment might be needed. I’m on my second one right now as I destroyed one on accident trying to fit it one as it was tight. |

All I needed was the slip trip and ejector to make the 53 frt I'm curious what problems they encountered on the 53/93 FRTs. Seems like they had a plan for an MP5 like conversion (using a special 223 trip and 223 ejector) tried it and need to go back to the drawing board. It seems like a logical conversion, but lots of things show up in real testing. I will wait patiently |

I think there may be a solution soon. They mentioned something in another thread that looked promising. That they are still working on it |

That they are still working on it MKE uses the blocking-bar type of semi-auto “enforcement” which prevents the use of full-auto carriers with sear trips. Perhaps related to that? |

Supposedly he is working on a version for the MKEs. |

Yeah, those are built to the original HK semi-auto shelf spec. Should be compatible with anything that works with HK91/93/94. Just the variable if it’s a good C93 or a bad one. ![]() I have two myself, one that’s the gray park finish that’s supposed to be the “better” of the original two subcontractors and one of the PTR rebuilds. The AP53 is a lot better built than both of them, ha. |

It seems as if a gun is not made by H&K (who up until recently denied the US Market their stamped guns for decades) the guns are often touted as poor copies. As German engineering would have 7 parts do the job of 2 parts, that is easy to believe. However not all clones are bad and certainly worthy of us "poor" to use nonetheless even if not perfect. In the Absence of HK offering anything to the consumer - a clone will do. This forum exists because of mostly clones and sometimes helping each other deal with clone issues/fixes so that we can own and enjoy HK "style" products that HK would otherwise deny us of. Only very recently did HK offer much (since 89) perhaps due to success of clone sales. Turkish, Paki and US-Made or individual built clones are probably not perfect but at least exist so people get to actually own and shoot them. |
|
Early on, a lot of folks would say that the PTRs were actually better built than the HK91. The welds were cleaner, the powdercoat finish was superior to anything HK did. As new ownership comes and goes it seems they take some epic missteps (non-fluted barrels comes to mind) but so far they have been able to pause and refocus. The HK/clone community has definitely been a mix of elitism and making things work for decades. I'm glad an middle ground has developed. I have six (and a half if we count the rebuilt C93) PTRs I can speak directly to and they're stellar guns. That said, I haven't purchased a new one in the last year--as they've expanded into the suppressor space, maybe they're losing some focus on their roller-locked guns. It doesn't help that it seems their prices have climbed a substantial amount so they're starting to exist as a premium product. It doesn't leave a lot of room for poor quality control or customer service. I'd be curious to hear what Atlantic or someone says about what they've noticed in broad schemes but they may be hesitant to step on their toes too much. |

FYI for those of you interested in the AP53. While waiting for mine to be delivered I went ahead and ordered one of those taper adapters from KAK so I can use a supressor on mine. Turns out...that taper looks like a thing of the past. Looks like they have a normal flat cut now. Attached File Still not sure if I should go ahead and ordered a #7 locking piece or not. The current one is only marked with the last three numbers of the serial number. Bolt gap came in at 0.012. At least it appears in spec. How do I tell if I need the locking piece or perhaps its just best to put a new one in, #7 or #8, if running a can? |

How’s the magazine fit on that one, and have you tried steel or aluminum magazines? I’ve been on the fence about ordering one after reading mixed reviews of loose magazine wells since I have a pile of surplus mags for my Vector 93 clone. |

I only have the factory plastic mags and a handful of AC Unity plastic mags that I ordered. They are all pretty snug. The AC Unity appear to have a little more room but they certainly aren't loose by any means. The factory plastic mags feel almost too snug but are workable. I wouldn't want the magwell any tighter with the mags that I have. |

I moved the AP53 buffer/fixed recoil spring/rod to an HK clubfoot stock. I used the spring/rod from HK parts with the contract buffered A3 stock If you want to go the removable sear trip route you have to send in your AP53 buffer with your carrier. No A3 stock solution I am aware of yet |
