I have friend who just bought an SW5 at a gun show over the weekend for $1500 and it came with a 100 round beta mag (good price? or did he get taken for a fool?). But it's having some problems. It will feed the first round and fire it. it ejects the shell and loads the next one but won't fire. As far as we can tell the firing pin isn't being struck. If you clear the chamber and load the next round it will fire then the next round it loads same thing happens where it won't fire.

I thought it might be a spring problem or a hammer problem but I'm not familiar enough with the gun to know. Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like the bolt gap is too large. From some folks over at HKPro.

it took it back to the people he bought it from and they replaced all the springs. It still has the problem with 115gr he can get 5 to shoot ina row with 124gr and he doesn't have any 157 gr to try. Hopefully he'll get some soon and try that.

I agree with SIGP220guy, check the bolt gap. HKPRO has a wealth of knowledge on it.

Back in the day those carbines sold for 1500 new.

This is what I'm thinking as well.

how do you check the bolt gap?

Feeler guages and check the bolt gap. Too large of a bolt gap can cause light primer strikes and no strike. A good bolt gap range is .0010 to .0018.

Also make sure you do not have a "dead hammer". When you pull the trigger, do you hear the hammer drop?
Check bolt gap, hammer spring & re-coil rod.

Again, from the good folks over at HKpro.

Here's some info on how to check the bolt gap. Also look around at HKPro as well.

.0010 to .0018    ... ????                 Only 8 tenths? People cant even see that by eye. You sure you don't mean .001"-.018"?

.010-.018 inches

Yeah so an .008" (8 thousandths of an inch)... that makes more sense.

If you're going to pay someone to check it out I recommend:

He can make it work perfectly.  On mine I had to swap out the crappy trigger pack that came with it but yours could be a different issue.

My buddy got it working. He took it back to where he bought it from and they rebuilt the lower replacing all the springs and it's running now.

Thanks for all the help guys, it's much appreciated.

Figured that was what his issue was. I posted the solution on the 17th in his HKpro.com post. I had the same issue, dead trigger after first round. Happens somtimes on converted 91 trigger packs.

"Ran into an issue just like this in my Coharie CA94. After learning how the trigger group functioned in and out I discovered that the sear was not resetting after the carrier cycled. Basically you fire the gun, the carrier assemblly goes to the rear pushng the hammer back and as it travels forward again the hammer is supposed to rise and set for the next trigger pull. It worked fine with a .308 hammer spring installed but failed to reset with the 9mm hammer spring. The sear has a spring loaded plunger inside it that helps it to reset. If this plunger is gummed up it will attribute to this issue. Another spring that will attribute to this issue is the elbow spring. The factory HK94 embow spring has a roller on it that allows it to glide on the bottom of the sear. The clone packs have a elbow spring that rest directly on the bottom of the sear which adds tension and could attribute to the sear not resetting. In my case I had all three springs causeing my issue. The elbow spring, a dirty sear/plunger, and adding the 9mm hammer spring all together caused my trigger to be dead after the first shot. Adding the .308 hammer spring back in alleviated the problem but in my mind didnt fix it. Ultimately I replaced the sear with a PTR us made sear, replaced the elbow spring with a factory hk94 spring, and put the 9mm hammer spring back in. Problem is gone and trigger pack is smooth as silk. "

I think it may have a .308 hammer spring rather than a 9mm one. I had the exact same problem with mine til I replaced the spring.

1. let the bolt and carriers snap fwd on an empty chamber
2. set weapon to fire
3. pull trigger
4. measure gap between bolt head and bolt carrier Should be .004-.020
5. change rollers to obtain correct gap

.004-.020 is what your looking for also make sure you dont have a bolt head that has been ground on to adjust headspace
