First of all, let me just say that I know dick all about hk's.. It's something I'm hoping to change.
I have the opportunity to purchase a complete military G3 from a friend, minus the *EDIT* the upper receiver and fire control group for $500.. What am i looking at cost wise to complete it, what are my options (will 91 parts work?), and are there any things to look out for, etc. thank you guys in advance, oh mighty masters of hk knowledge |

IF it's an actual military H&K G3 upper, it is an MG (the upper receiver is the serialized part). If it's marked G3, it's probably an FMP built under licence, not an HK. Still a fine gun, just made in Portugal on German machines instead of in Germany on German machines.
If this is the case, it would have been imported prior to the 89 ban, so 922(r) wouldn't apply. Not sure who'd have the std. replacement parts in stock or even what they'd cost as I've been out of the HK91/G3 game for a couple of years. Yes, HK91 parts will fit. YMMV, and the above is simply my SWAG going upon your description. |

in the next few days i'll be taking a look at it to see what exactly i have to deal with. He did make it seem like it used to be a machine gun, and said i would need a semi auto FCG There is no such thing as "used" to be a machine gun in the US... at least not legally. The gun might have been a sear host, but that wouldn't make it an MG. If it is a transferrable registered receiver, you'll need to aquire the gun on a Form 4 after paying the tax. ETA: Take lots of photos and post them here. |

definitely will do, i trust that it is legal to own, my friend is no noob around guns (and he's a cop)
edit: its the upper receiver that is destroyed, i forgot on hk's thats the registered part. so if i buy a new upper and a semi auto FCG its a new gun, and i just use the parts to complete it? (and in this case would need X amount of us made parts, correct?) |

Similar to an AK build, but much more complicated (and quite a bit more expensive). If it were me, I'd send it to Jason at IGF and have him build it. |

Not necessarily - here's an early Golden State/Santa Fe semi-auto gun marked G3. http://i42.tinypic.com/erx6ia.jpg Granted there are exceptions, which is why I put the word "probably" in there. Then again, if it was one of those incredibly rare and early guns, I doubt the seller would be offering it for $500. |
| One would have to guess that it's one of the FMP kits that were floating around several years ago, with the cut upper receiver. Not to high jack this thread but if a guy really wanted a G3/ 91 type rifle wouldn't it still be cheaper to find a SAR 8 or a PTR than to build a FMP kit? |

If you build it yourself, or consign it to someone who may butcher the kit to make it run, then no, it would be cheaper going with a PTR. ETA: Link to IGF: http://www.investmentgradefirearms.com/ |
