I just got a PTR91 and took it out to sight it in today. Recoil seemed a bit excessive compared to an M1A or bolt .308. SInce I had a couple extra stocks from cheper than dirt laying around I deided to pop one on and see if perhaps I had a bad buffer in the factory stock. well reoil seemed to be signifigantly reduced with the HK stock. So I thought I would go ahead and swap the buffer out and see if it felt better with the PTR stock. WHen I took the Buffer out of the HK stock everything looked just as it is pictured here www.mg-42.net/G3_buttstock.htm. However when I went to remove the buffer from the PTR91 stock I noticed that there was not a buffer tube, colored light green in the pic, nor was there a third screw holding the buffer tube on. So my quation is, is this normal on the PTRs? Does the lack of tube effect function? It could be my immagination but I think the rifle had less recoil with the HK stock then it did with the HK buffer in the PTR stock without the buffer tube and third screw. |
Nope. The rear screw does nothing to affect function of the buffer. It is simply a 3rd screw. Your new JLD stock may have a brand new, and stiff, buffer spring in it. Some of them have been found to be "painted" so heavily that they don't function as they should. As a test, remove the buffer and place it in a bench vise. Squeeze it and see of the plunger depresses into the buffer body. It should. For the not inconsiderable amount of ~$130, you can upgrade to the MSG90 buffer for better buffering action. If you want even more buffering, the "G3 Heavy" or even the HK21 buffers can be had, but at significantly higher costs than the MSG90 buffer. Some have reported decent results with JLD's "Comfort Zone" rubber buffer, but I'm skeptical adding a hunk of aftermarket rubber in where there was never designed to be a hunk of rubber. Some have had their JLD CZ buffers disintegrate in fairly short order so caveat emptor on those. |
| my PTR stock was the same way. do these new PTR labeled stock strip down the same as the g3's or is that recoil pad glued on. i dont want to go vice-ing it and find i break my stock ....again. my first PTR stock cracked but PTR replaced it quick under warranty. if the stock comes apart i intend to put my G3 internals into the stock so i can have that 3rd mount bolt. its fairly certain that my stock cracked because the 2 small mount screws loosened. |

Thanks for the info. Yes the PTR stocks break down like the G3 stock. An easier way than vising it is to remove the buffer and push the butt pad off with a peice of dowl rod inserted through the whole left by the buffer. That way you do not have take a chance putting the stock in a vise. You could not do that on a G3 stock because of the extra parts that would be in the way. As far as putting G3 internals in I do not think you could get the buffer tube into the stock without removing the two rivets that you put your take down pins in when dissasembling the rifle. I can come up with no way to remove them. With them in pol;ace there is not enough room to get the buffer tube in because of thepiece that sticks off of it. |
you are quite correct. that sucks. next question. the NOS parts that numerichs sells, do their new hk stocks already have the rear tube in place? i guess i should call them |
