#1 - As far as I know there is no such thing as a post '94 SAR-8, am I right?

#2 - Approx value in very good to excellent condition?

There are three main types, and that will make a difference to the value. There was a SAR-3 with a "8" overstamped on the "3" (steel receiver), an SAR-8 (I think there was this second type anyway with a steel receiver), and an SAR-8 (aluminum receiver).

The first two were imports from a Greece factory, and as close as you can get to a genuine HK-91. The third was a US made receiver (post 94) and you'll get mixed feedback on them. But in any case, they don't have the collector value so they don't have the same resale value.

The quickest way to tell if it's the aluminum receiver, in a picture, is to look for the mounting rail on the top. The aluminum SAR-8 had a full length scope rail. Well nearly full length anyway.

From over at HKPRO.....

There are 5 variants:

1. "G3" (L receiver- SN; R receiver G3 7.62MM/SPRINGFIELD ARMORY USA/GENESEO, IL/no MADE IN GREECE- first imports, then MADE IN GREECE);
2. "SAR3" (L- SN; R- SAR3 7.62MM/SPRINGFIELD ARMORY USA/GENESEO, IL/MADE IN GREECE);
3. "SAR3 overstamped SAR8" (early/L- SAR-8 SPORTER/SN; R- SAR8 7.62MM/SPRINGFIELD ARMORY USA/GENESEO, IL/MADE IN GREECE; later/L- SAR-8 SPORTER/EBO GREECE/MADE IN GREECE/SN; R- SAR8 7.62MM/SPRINGFIELD ARMORY USA/GENESEO, IL);
4. "SAR8" (early/L- SPRINGFIELD ARMORY/Genesio, IL, USA/7.62MM/SN; R- SAR-8 SPORTER/EBO GREECE/MADE IN GREECE; later/L- SAR-8 SPORTER/EBO GREECE/MADE IN GREECE/SN; R- SAR8 7.62MM/SPRINGFIELD ARMORY USA/GENESIO, IL);
5. "SAR8" (American receiver with receiver scope mount)(L- no markings; R- SAR-8 .308 CAL./SPRINGFIELD ARMORY/D.C. INDUSTRIES INC./BLOOMINGTON, MN USA/SN).

Values decrease from 1. to 5., with the "G3" being very rare.
Values 1. through 3. are comparable to HK91's.
Hope this helps.

I've got #3 and it's just as good as my HK91.I'd avoid #5 like the plague.

So there were still 3 variants of the "SAR-8". But what were the timelines?

I have a over stamp sar 8 it was made in 1993. most of the over stamps where stuck in customs in 1989. If you can find a good deal on a sar8 usa made one. SA will trade you for a new M1A. That what they did for me. They sent me a loaded M1A and 6 30rd mags. The greek sar8 have a lifetime warn from SA

my SAR 8 as pictured above is actaully(now) 922r compliant, US made flash hidder, some JLD trigger parts(with Williams trigger work), US made cocking handle(21E) and something else I think......got a sweet deal on it as it was sent off to ARS to get the barrel cut down, came the way pictured, just made it kosher

Done my homework and I need an SAR-3 or 3 overstamped 8, I had an opportunity to get an SAR-8 Hellenic (Greek) model but it needs to be 922r compliant and I don't want to risk it.

The way I read the 922 requirements there is nothing you can do to make an imported receiver 922r compliant as they are specifically proscribed from modification. The exception in the SAR genre are the oversrtike SAR-8's which were SAR-3's but caught up in customs during the ban. Will you get caught...probably not. I am in a profession and work for an agency which has zero tolerance to federal felonies (or any others for that matter) so I can't take the chance. Please correct me if I'm wrong because I really want one.

not sure if right or wrong, but I dont see it as any different than a JLD as far as 922r goes or for that matter, making a USC/UMP conversion 922r. but 922r always did confuse me

this might help from the ATF
