I have an opportunity to buy a SAR-8 in like new condition with sporter stock but I don't know much about it.  Is it as good as JLD PTR-91?  What do you guys think about it?

He is asking $1000.  Is it worth it?

Thanks for your help

Um, there is not comparison between a JLD and a Hellenic SAR 8.  Why would you eat at McDonalds if you could eat at Tiffanys for the same price? If it is the alumnium receiver dont buy it.  You want the sheet metal and you will need enough American parts to make it 922r compliant. Some of the barrels had their threads shaved off and is a fucker to fix.  Others have had only a sleeve pinned on which is easy to remove and put a real flash hider.

If it's set up like this -

and marked like this -

I would say buy it.

The hellenic (Greek) mfg guns are second only to HK Oberndorf factory guns.

just my .02¢

Is the quality as high as the JLD?

IMHO it's a better product.

Is there an easy way to quickly determine whether a barrel is threadless or merely pinned?

I have seen various SAR 3/8 and SAR 8 rifles with either a fake, nonfunctional flash hider or a shorter, steel "donut" attached to the muzzle. At a recent show, I examined a SAR "3" that was over-stamped with an "8" and it had the donut muzzle object. By the way, the dealer would probably take about $900 for it (appears almost unused in Springfield box with paperwork). What do you think is underneath the "donut", threads or no threads? I'm tempted to get this rifle and if I do, I'd like to have a muzzle brake permanently attached (per the dictates in effect in this horrible state). I'm assuming the presence of threads would make this job easier. Tips on how to remove the "donut"?

Info appreciated.

Sounds like the rifle I had.  The donut is screwed on and a pin placed through it that crosses the barrel just behind the barrel shoulder.  You should see evidence of one or two welded over holes and the donut may wiggle slightly when you try to turn it.

To remove, just grind/machine along the pin to remove it, then unscrew.

I had the weight on mine.  It had the correct threads underneath, and I put a Smith Vortex on it.
It is sweet.
I went with the JLD cocking lever, three part trigger group and the housing, had a a trigger job done, and a US pistol grip.
Instaleed the HK21 butt pad and heavy buffer in it.
Harldy kicks and is my favourite rifle.
I never thought I'd own a Cetme/G3 rifle, as I only had touched Century guns and trashed HKs.  It made me a believer.
