I am hoping to buy a JLD PTR from Atlantic in the not-too-distant future. Trouble is, I can't decide between the carbine ("K") series or the original full-length rifles. Is there any difference in accuracy or performance? Also, isn't the "K" version a JLD idea ? (i.e. HK never made a 16" G3, correct?)

Second, am I correct in assuming that any new rifle with the wide forearm will have aluminum insulation in the forearm?

Lastly, I'd like to get one of them spiffy claw scope mounts for it, too. I remember reading that the ones from Tapco won't fit on a JLD reciever. Is there any truth to this/where can one get a scope mount? Will it be too high to use without a cheekpeice?

Thanks for the help (sorry for all the questions).

BTW, can these accept bayonets? Thanks

Standard length PTRs are averaging around 1.5 inch groups
at a hundred yards ,Kurtz variants getting 2.5 inch to 3 inch .

The Kurtz barrels are 2 inches shorter ,causing the muzzle
velocity to be slightly lower.
Lower muzzle velocity=increased bullet drop at long range .

If you don't shoot past 300 yards ,you'll never notice the difference .

I don't remember seeing any original HKs with shortened barrels ,
but that was along time ago .

PTRs with a wide forearm are insulated with an aluminum piece .
Be aware that a standard wide forearm must be modified to fit
the PTRs heavy barrel ,so it's easier to buy a PTR with a wide forearm
already on it then to modify one later .
The Kurtz forearm is also shorter than the standard .

I've had 2 Tapco Claw mounts and couldn't use either on my PTR .
They fit but wobbled .

Original HKs are expensive I'm waiting on Robert RT.com to
get in a new shipment at the end of this month .($200 a piece )

You can use the scope somewhat without a cheekrest ,but it's difficult .
If you want good accuracy ,you'll need something .
I have a saddleback cheekrest ,but the open sights are hard
to use with it on .
When I get a new mount I'm going to figure it out.
I might just thin down the rest until the open sights are easier to see.

You will need to get a bayonet adapter to use use an HK bayonet .
Robert RTG.com has these for $18  ? a piece ,as well as a deal for
a bayonet/adapter set .The adapter will need reblued  to match .
Got mine a few weeks ago .

I've dealt with quite a few dealers ,and been burnt before .
RTG has always been great for me so I use them for
everything I can and highly recommend them .
They always get me my stuff within 5 days ,and
I'm in Pennsylvania and they're in Arizona .

Oh ,Atlantic Firearms is a good dealer to .
They are fast ,and if you have a problem with anything Blaine
will get on the rifle's builder high speed .

Stay away from the crapco AKA Tapco mounts! The HK mount is the only way to fly! As far as barrel length, I have the std length & thats what I would go with if buying one again!

Enjoy your new PTR91

If you want a better scope mount than the HK one, goto DSA's website and look at the B&T low mountd for the HK/clones...

Much better than the HK mount and does not need a cheekpiece.....

Oh as for the Tapco one...I had one...IMO not the crap that people call it. It was NOT airsoft and was well made...It fit my PTR like the HK one. It was solid and did not move under firing. It held the zero. The only reason I got rid of it was because I did not want to use a cheekpiece and I found a better ergonomic mount.

Dog1,

How does the Brugger & Thomet scope mount attach to the PTR91?  Is it more or less likely to damage the rifle finish compared to the claw style mount?

Yes it is less likely to damage the finish...it has 4 small pads that are secured to the mount with 4 allen head screws from the top of the mount.

As you tighten them down, the screws pull the mount down and pull the pads up to engage the bulges on the receiver of the PTR/HK.

The B&T mount I used was rock solid and never moved under firing.
