This topic in the AR15 forum got me thinking a bit, and since I am starting to broaden my Gun collection and knowledge into H&Ks I was wondering if there is a difference I need to be aware of between a full auto and semi auto bolt assembly in H&K style rifles and clones, particularly the MP5?  If there is a difference, how can I tell which one I have, and make sure that mine is legal, and is there a lehality issue there to begin with?

Near the tail end of the carrier on the underside you will see ramps on both sides if it is F/A. On semi the ramp closest to the ejection port will be machined off. that ramp trips the auto sear by means of a trip lever, which would have to be installed into your trigger group along with several other parts to go F/A. (of course all NFA rules apply at that point) Just having a MP5 carrier in will not make it go F/A. I have one in my HK93 and SP89 only because I own a registered sear that i use between the two. Personally if you never plan to have a transferrable sear in the future, stay away from any potential problems by not having any F/A parts.  Just my .02 cents

The ATF has no problem with full auto bolt carriers in semi HKs. Many clones come this way and others offer it as an option.

Here is the difference between the two carriers:

You can see where material has been removed on the semi to prevent tripping the auto lever.
