Fed regs do not specifically require any U.S. parts in compliant "assault rifles". Fed regs do limit the number of imported parts in such a rifle to no more than ten. The ten part limit goes along with a master list of twenty parts that BATF has promulgated. The G3 type rifle has seventeen applicable parts from the master list. To have a functioning rifle with no more than ten of the seventeen parts being imported means, in practical terms, that seven imported parts require replacement with U.S. made parts. U.S.  made available parts of the seventeen applicable parts are receiver, trunnion, barrel, charging handle (termed "op rod" by fed regs), bolt, hammer, sear, handguard, buttstock, pistol grip, mag body, mag floorplate, mag follower, and muzzle device. I am not aware of available U.S. made trigger, bolt carrier, or trigger housing.
