I just bought a couple of kits from Tasco (IMBEL and G1), and I'm picking them up on my b-day yeah!!!!!  I need to know where to pick up recivers, and how to determine what type reciver I need (type 1, 2, or 3) Also where can I find the recivers at a decent price.  Don't worry I won't go for an aluminium reciver (I've seen the pics). To keep it legal, I'm thinking about putting in the US made upper reciver (of course), trigger, sear, hammer, pistol grip, hand guards, and muzzle brake.  How does this sound or would someone suggest a different route.

G1's accept Type 1 and Type 2 receivers. Imbels normally use Type 3's. I say normally because I have heard of some Type 1 Imbel kits floating around. You can use any type metric receiver on any metric ifle. The differences are only cosmetic. Lots of guys build STG's and G1's on Imbel Type 3 receivers. No big deal unless you want the rifle to look "correct".

If I were you I would get a Coonan Type 1 from FAC for the the G1 and an Imbel Type 3 receiver for the Imbel rifle. Or you could spend more and get DSA receivers. They make all three types. The DSA's and Coonans count as U.S. parts. The Imbel does not.

You don't have to use a U.S. made receiver to be legal, just so you know.

On my G1, the U.S. parts are: DSA receiver, DSA H/T/S, Ironwood buttstock and pistol grip, and Schneider Machine charging handle. I have one more U.S. part than I actually need on that gun. You only need six U.S. parts on an FAL with a plain muzzle. I kept the original handguards to keep the rifle looking original.

My Imbel has an Entre'prise receiver(yuck!), FSE H/T/S, U.S. muzzle brake, Tapco gas piston, and U.S. pistol grip. Total of 7 U.S. parts for an FAL with a muzzle attachment. I switched out the original buttstock and handguards for Izzy furniture. It looks cool.

Good luck with your builds.

Delta, Hi Vel pretty much nailed it on the head.

I can't sing the praises of the DSA receivers enough, they are truely beautiful, but more expensive than the other offerings........but you do tend to get what you pay for in life.  The Imbels are FN licensed, but the ones I've seen recently have had some tooling marks I'd rather not see, but then they are a good price.

I haven't seen any of the Dan Coonan FAL receivers yet, but I have had experience with a .357 magnum semi-auto that he built back in the late 80's and early 90's and it was a beautiful thing indeed.

Type 1 and 2 receivers have lightening cuts on them, and I really like the aesthetics of them, but the Type 3 is certainly a solid piece.  The Type 3 receiver started being used in the mid 1970's.

DSA Type 2 receiver on top, pre-ban Imbel (Springfield Armory) Type 3 on the bottom:

And I can't help posting this pic again....my pre-ban Springfield Armory SAR-48 Para (Type 3 receiver) and new DSA StG-58A with a Type 2.

ok guys thanks for all the advice.  I know I don't need a us reciver, but I looked for some actual imbels and g1's, and alas no luck in finding any at a decent price

Sarco has Imbels with the "gear" logo for $238 + a small shp. charge. They also list a "pre-ban" for a somewhat higher price. The "pre-ban" is exactly the same receiver...don't waste your $$$ as they can NOT be used to build a true, pre-ban FAL on.

FAC has them cheaper, plus they have the non-GL Imbels for around $ 189. Won't find any much cheaper than that as far as I know.

Definitely go with FAC. They are having a sale on Dan Coonan receivers unitil the end of this month. Sale ends 1/31/03 and they are selling for $199, for a US made receiver is really a decent deal. Most of the guys at the Fal files discussion forum that have gotten them have very good things to say about them.

I recently got 4-Type 3 NGL Imbels from FAC and was very happy with them. They were all flawless. The only down side of these is the CAI import marks stamped on the side.

If you decide to go the FAC route and you have a local FFL that will do the transfer for you then contact Harlan at Fac directly
(800-486-5971  ext.114) and he will help you out.

If you definitely want a DSArms receiver, the nicest I have bought, you can still get in on the group purchase on the FALfiles. All you have to do is be a registered member of that forum and follow the directions here:
www.falfiles.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=52089

Limit is one receiver per member but the price is real good compared to the normal retail price of a DSArms receiver, I beleive its below dealer cost in fact.
Doesn't cost anything to join and is the initial reason I joined over there. As a bonus if you're thinking about building yourself there is a wealth of knowlege there on building Fals.

Having heard all the good things about the Coonan receivers from FAC I'd go that route if I were buying a receiver right now.
