That's not a bad deal. Are Coonan receiver decent, or is a FAL builder going to laugh at me when I ask him to assemble my rusty G1 parts onto it?

I bought a Coonan receiver about a month or so ago.  Type 1c, no carry handle cut, no custom markings.

I'm not a true FAL geek, and haven't completed the rifle yet.  I am a rather picky gun nerd and a machinist.  I have expectations when it comes to quality and service.

I think the Coonan receiver is quite nice.  The casting is nice, as well as the machine work.  A few acceptable tool marks here or there.  Deburred and finished nicely.  Oiled and packaged nicely.  Shipped timely with tracking.

Top it off with a freindly person to talk to whenever I called.  They told me when I called to order, the receivers weren't parked yet and it would be a few days......It took me longer to get my FFL's paperwork to them....I was the weak link.

Total time was less than 2 weeks, and that was all my fault, had to find a new FFL, and they dropped the ball gettin their info to Coonan.  Coonan was patient with me as I got things in order.

I would buy another Coonan in a heartbeat if I had a reason to, and would recommend them to anyone.

I paid $365 shipped for mine, and while I'd love to save the $40.....the receiver's worth it and Coonan deserves to get paid a fair price......I can't say that about to many companies nowdays.

I have been resisting the powerful urge to break out the debit card and get another Coonan receiver and one of the Argentine kits offered by Sarco. I have absolutely no need for another rifle, but I know that it will keep chewing on me until I give in and buy them.

ETA: My Coonan receiver was not nearly as trouble free as the one reviewed by Gunplumber. I had to make what I consider extensive modifications to make it work. But, I had the tools and the rudimentary skills needed to make the mods and it works fine now. I suspect that I will get another Coonan and finally put this F A L building business to bed.

Can you elaborate on what troubles you had, and what modifications you had to make?

Charging handle slot was tapered. The handle would not go the last 3rd
of the way forward. I used valve grinding compound to open the slot.

I had to use a rat tail file to file a groove into the ejector block so
that the magazine could be inserted and lock into place. I could lock
them, but it was very hard and unpleasant to insert or remove. The
locking shoulder hole was over sized. I had to use a locking shoulder
with a larger than standard diameter to get a proper fit. Every barrel
that I had would under time by a significant amount. I had to put the
barrel that I selected for the build in a lathe and reduce the shoulder
face so that it would time properly.

There was one other thing, but it was minor and I really don't remember what it was.
I just used the coupon code to order a Coonan receiver and a SARCO Argentine rifle kit. I hope that you are all happy now.
