i have a DSA SA58 which has been sitting in thesafe for the last 12 years and I  got a wild hair and decided to take it apart and clean it up. everything went well untill I came to reinstalling the bolt recoil
sping back in through the stock. HOw do you compress that damned thing enough to get started in the threads, I can't find a way to trap the spring or compress it enough. Have spent the last 2 hours messing with it and am ready to give it the heave ho!

You really need the proper recoil spring tool to do it safely. The spring is retained by the outside collar and the tool allows this to turn as you compress the spring.
Not having the tool, you can use a large flat bladed screwdriver. The spring is under compression and if the blade slips out of the groove, you can catch it in the face.

Take a pice of cleaning rod and a 1 inch wood dowell. Drill a hole for  the cleaning rod can fit into but do not go clear trough. You can use this set up like a butt stock tool. The cleaning rod goes insied the stock bolt and recoil spring and makes it easier to compress. Make sure you put the butt stock back on first. Hear is a DSA busttstock tool to give you an idea.

Really no need to pull out the recoil spring unless something is wrong with it.
You can buy a tool for cheap that makes it quick and easy.
Go here and click on FAL tools
They are $12

Only reason to pull the spring is to replace the stock with a para folder.
