I've heard this discussed before and I'm wondering if anyone can describe, or even better, post photos, of how to utilize the Bren sling as an improvised shooting sling on a FAL.  I can't quite picture it from the descriptions I've heard so far.

Using a sling for shooting support is not advisable on an FAL. Tension on the front attachment point will shift the point of impact. Now, if you have a free float fore-arm, go right ahead. I highly doubt most folks can sling up and provide consistent tension from shot-to-shot and different shooting positions to make it worthwhile. Also, when shooting from sandbags, the bags should be placed close to the receiver and magazine to minimize upward barrel deflection and its subsequent change in the point of impact.

I am quite well aware of this which is why I'm asking this question as my understanding of what I have read of this particular technique does away with the problem you mentioned by placing the tension elsewhere.  The difficulty in using a shooting sling is one of my main complaints about the FAL.

What technique are you talking about, if you don't mind?

If the sling attaches to the barrel (or non-free float handguards), it's going to shift the POI.

It's some sort of trick, which I'm having a hard time picturing, which is meant to prevent that issue.  Apparently the key factor making it possible is the length of the Bren sling.  It's been mentioned on other forums by vets of both the Australian and South African militaries.

Something I've been considering though is the T-48 handguard with the sling swivel in the center.  It looks like that could also avoid the issue when used with a shooting sling but I'm not really sure.

The FAL can benefit from a light, hasty sling as a shooting aid.  This requires practice, but will cut one's groups by mebbe 20% if done right.

Taking a tight sling will deflect the barrel on most FALs, and is unwise.

I've yet to see any sort of arrangement that will allow the FAL to benefit from a tight sling as shooting-aid.  Those that have discovered such, please chime in.

Yeah I'm interested to hear this as well... I can get a bit tighter groups slung up tight, but I see a pretty large POI shift when I do it.
