I'm mounting an optic to my STG-58.  I have the DSA scope mount that replaces the dust cover and I just ordered a Burris 2-7x35 tactical scope.  I have read here repeatedly that you should mount your scope as low as possible on the FAL.  Can someone recommend rings that will help me keep this scope mounted low?

Thanks.

Glad to see another MT brother here; bummer I just transferred to the SE; Unlce said I had too.

I use a good to high quality ring; like you would for your elk rifle and have not had a problem. However, I need a medium to low mount for a proper cheek-weld.

Think I used a low mount for my 40mm Leupold scope.

Sorry about the crappy pic...

Warne QD rings are great. The medium height is what I used for my FAL.

Leupold QRW rings, IMHO, offer the best combination of quality and price.  When the scope is removed from the rifle, the rings will not self-disassemble, as some others will.  I have several sets of Leupold QRW rings, and never a problem with any of them.  In fact, my FAL, set up much like yours, sports a pair.

DS Arms used to have a pretty good price on them, but look around.

Exactly which height rings you need is determined by the eye-relief the scope requires, the shape of the occular bell of the scope, any possible interferance with your rear sight, and the shape/height of your stock.  It is a question of jiggering all these variables around, but do not compromise on eye-relief, and try to work things out so that no cheek riser is required when you have a good cheek weld on the stock.  Ideally, your cheek weld when using the scope should be nearly identical to that when using iron sights.  As you can see, this also requires mounts as low as possible.

Of these variables, eye-relief is the most critical, as without correct eye-relief, the scope is next-to useless.  The FAL having appreciable recoil, you will want the scope set away from your skull as much as possible, while still having correct eye-relief.  Set your rear sight to lowest setting before doing all this, of course.  Read up on how to mount a scope; it is a little more tricky than some folks think.  Boston's Gun Bible has a good write-up on the process, and it is a book you should own, if you do not already have it.  Having a buddy help in the process is a big plus (the book will explain), and make sure you have some alcohol (to prep/clean threaded surfaces) and some blue loc-tite for final tightening-down.

In the end, you should be able to close your eyes, grab your scoped rifle, assume a firing position, open your eyes, and see through the scope perfectly with no fussing around.  That is your goal.  How you get there and what equipment/parts you need to do so is up to you, the scope, and the rifle.

Your situation is a little different than mine, on account of the different scope.  I was able to mount a Burris 3-9X  scope on my StG58A FAL using QRW rings so that the eye relief  and height were perfect for me, and no cheek riser was necessary.  YMMV.  I can use my scope, remove it, use the irons,  all with a minimal adjustment of cheek weld, and no fuss.  QRW rings allow re-mount of scope with no loss of zero, naturally, but some rings do not.

DSA also sells a removable cheek riser, should you need it.  You might also consider the use of a slip-on butt pad from Pachmayr, if you find a little more length of pull is useful in obtaining correct eye-relief during the mounting of the scope.  DS Arms has a good return/exchange policy if you need to return the mounts for a different height pair.  I'd go with the medium height to start.  YMMV.

Your scope uses a Butler Creek #13, Eye Style, 1.570". This means you will likely need to use something like a Warne 1" Tactical Scope Rings  (601M.) These rings have an optical center line of .940". Optical center line is measured from the top of the mounting base to center of rifle scopes. This should give you clearance at the FAL rear sight which can interfere with the scope eyepiece on scopes like the Burris.

Thank you all for the useful advise.  I will post an update when I get the rings.
