So I got 2 kits I'm gonna build soon.  I plan on shorting the barrel to around 18inches.  Should I cut the threads for the FH the same as they were or go with  1/2x28?  I don't care much about keeping the gun orignal.  Any reasons not to use a more US standard threading?

I went with a 5/8"-24 Phantom on mine:

1/2-28 is considered a bit 'thin' for use on a .308 barrel.

5/8 is pretty much the standard for US made muzzle devices on a .308

good to know.

I see I can get a Vortex in the standard FAL twist.

As eddienyr said, 9/16 is the thread for most FAL barrels, either left or right hand.

I know that the pws is alittle expensive. But check out the demo
videos of them shooting full auto. You will see how well they work.

You could look at Advanced Armament Corporation or Gemtech.  Both have flash hiders that are QD for suppressor in 9/16-24 LHorRH.
