My first FAL, an SA58 I got for a song, 900 bucks, and shoots GREAT for the first shot. Next round is chambered, but trigger isn't reset. I set the gas tube all the way down to "1" from when the FFL set it for me at "4" and still the same deal. I have to charge it again (meanwhile, the newly chambered round gets ejected and I have to go hunting for it in the grass ) so that it'll fire again. What's the story? Anyone have a clue as to what I'm doing wrong?

I would suggest you follow these instructions - make sure your rifle is clean and lubed in all the right places.

Gas Setting

IF the next round is being chambered it may be something on the trigger. This very same thing happened to my new build. I had to polish the trigger in a few areas to make it smoother for the sear to reset. Did that and NO more problems. I found info on FAL files while looking for trigger job info.

Pop the grip off and change out the trigger return spring for starters, then check the hammer to see what aftermarket company made it. If you can't tell, and have enough parts count, a good used factory hammer and trigger return spring will most likely solve it. If it is chambering a fresh round, then I doubt that the gas setting is the problem. Look also for FSE on the hammer, they can have problems like this, and some have a lighter sear spring (in the trigger assembly). In this case, a sear and spring is what it needs, along with the hammer and trigger return spring. Best to go to falfiles, and do some research. None of what I have mentioned is all that hard to do, and the parts are easy to get, just do your homework before starting.

I had the same thing happen..turned out the US-made FCG parts had the engagement surfaces cut a little bit wrong and the sear wasn't catching the hammer with the trigger pulled.

You can see if you have the same problem by doing the following:

1.  Make sure the rifle is unloaded

2.  Insert and EMPTY Magazine

3.  Cock the rifle and release the bolt

4.  Pull the trigger and hold it back, DO NOT RELEASE

5.  Charge the rifle, while holding the trigger back

6.  Release the bolt

If you have a sear engagement surface problem, as I did, the hammer will follow the bolt carrier  down, which is likely what is happening to you.

What I did was I sent the complete lower to Bill Springfield and had him do a trigger job on it.  Problem solved.

Same problem here:

After I begrudgingly installed the domestic H/T/S parts, the hammer failed to reset 10% of the time.  I have since obtained a stronger sear spring (the one that came with my kit was a much weaker spring; for the purpose of lessening the trigger pull weight).  Also, I carefully filed a deeper notch in the hammer.

An inconsequential notch in the hammer, combined with a weak sear spring, is not only a functioning issue, but also a safety issue IMHO.  Perhaps I'll get around to test firing it next week.
