Can I File My FAL?

––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

My new/used (looks new) Century R1A1 FAL has a slight feed problem. This (apparently) is one of the "unibrows" that are well known (and now by me also) to have feed problems but can be made to work. It will hand cycle and eject Remington Core-Lokt .308 soft points and Winchester Premium Ballistic tips. I tried 3 different manufacturers FMJ rounds (2 were 7.62x51 NATO and 1 was WOLF .308) and, with every one, the tip of the bullet catches right at the end of the chamber on the tiny flat surface. I think, all that needs to happen is that small section needs to be tapered so that it will not catch the tip of the bullet. I would think that once they can pass that point they will feed and the rifle function fine (assuming that everything else is ok) Question is, can I take a rat tail file and do it myself or is there more to it than that? Possible barrel timing or headspace issues to consider. Also I got 2 used mags (metric) with the rifle and it does the same thing with both. Last but not least, should I consider the rifle dangerous to operate at this point and not shoot it at all or go ahead and try it out today with the soft points?
I really wanted to shoot it last night (live in the country) but decided not to until I got a little more info. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

Are you going to pull the bbl loose to do this?

A small scallop should not be dangerous unless is exposes too much sidewall.

It can be done, just go slow.

if you haven't used a rat tail file yet, consider this stuff:

you will need a dremil type tool,  it goes slow but it will leave a polish/very smooth finish.
We use it in aviation to smooth small dings, etc in steeel or titanium ( sky-crane rotor heads, gears, Huey mast, yada yada )   I recently used some on a HK claw mount as it was too tight for a Vector clone, removed some material and kept edges smooth, now it fits perfectly and doesn't scratch the paint  ( yes they paint HK / clone receivers )
