I have a new 16" tactical model and it came with (I am assuming) a bored out AR15 A2 flash suppressor. The threads are the normal AR threads at 1/2x28. I thought the 1/2x28 threading was unusual for a .308 barrel. What .308 capable flash suppressors are out there in 1/2x28? |

Might be worth looking at: primaryweapons.com/store/pc/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=&idproduct=37 |
A long time ago, I reported on a test of different FAL muzzle devices with respect to their effect on accuracy. My test rifle was a stock StG 58, so my results might not pertain to your shorter-barreled version, because your barrel is likely a bit stiffer due to reduced length. Long story short, the more weight you hung out there at the end of the std-length barrel, the better the accuracy. I finally settled on a Belgian combo device with the addition of a South African clip-on compensator for daytime use. Bayonet optional, but it was cut to allow full use of the vents on the combo device. Slick. The standard-length Stoll came in second, by a hair. Again, this was a test of accuracy, not flash suppression. I expect both the BCD and the Stoll wold have done well in FS capability. As far as an AR-type flash suppressor is concerned, I doubt very much that it will be as effective on a FAL as it would be on an AR. One needs only look at the longer length of the M1A/M-14 flash suppressor of similar design to conclude that an un-lengthened AR flash suppressor will likely be sub-optimal. The two rifles fire cartridges which produce different amounts of exhaust gasses, thus the longer length of the M1A/M-14 FS as opposed to the smaller FS used with, similarly, the smaller 5.56 ctg. Again, look at the length of the Brit-style FS for the FAL, the so-called Browning FS, which is similar in design to the AR-type. Quite long and rather fragile, I'm told. It did poorly in my tests on accuracy. Note that a FS of different design, like the Vortex, might require a different (usually shorter) length to achieve the same (or better} level of flash suppression. I apologize if this post does not answer your question directly, but hopefully the background inf provided will be useful. |

Thanks for the great replies and suggestions guys! I have some more time before I am buying since it has a flash suppressor on it already. I just wanted a little more muzzle control. FrenchKat, I am aware that most metric FAL's have the LH thread but strangely my DSA FAL does not. It is a measured 1/2x28. |
