I took my rifle out shooting today, and when I got back I cleaned it, and took the gas plug out.
Well, it came out easily enough, but it's stuck trying to get it back in. I even hit it with a  rubber hammer and it still won't go in. There's a large amount of play, meaning I can slide it back and forth, but I can't push it in and I can't push it out.

It functioned fine, no jams or anything.

ETA, I've managed to, using a pair of pliers, remove it. I still can't get it in.

Second ETA, I've got it in place. I tried to remove it again to see if it was still stuck, and now it won't go in again. I've got the "teeth" lined up correctly, small to small and large to large.

I've managed to get it where I can, with a lot of force, move it in and out, but it's still far from the "pressure from the piston spring will push it out with some force" my manual says.

Are you pushing the button in?

There are two tangs on a FAL gas plug one big and one small. When inserting the gas plug into the gas block make sure the SMALL tang is facing up. Push button on an Imbel gas plug or lever on a Steyr gas plug all the way in and insert into gas bloc, the slowly rotate gas block clockwise until you have turned it 180 degrees and the "A" is facing UP.

And never ever force anything or beat it with a hammer.

Did you adjust eh front sight at all?

It might be rubbing on the body of the gas block.
