Can anyone tell me how I can tell, w/o buying and shooting it, if a SAR-48 with the 3-position selector still installed is potentially a "happy" weapon? In full auto mode, what disengages the hammer, or is the hammer ever engaged to anything; does it just follow the bolt forward? Thanks in advance. G_30 |

Go to Falfiles and run a search for "sear cut." Essentially you flip it over and look to see if it is sear cut- the search should produce images so you know what to look for. But IMO, unless this FAL you are looking at has a $16,000 price tag, I doubt it is a sear-cut or FA SAR-48. |

No, not in any normal intuitive manor, if you put the selector in the FA position the hammer will follow the bolt forward w/o ever catching. The chances of it firing because of this are almost nil- essentially the FA position is a single-shot position. The difference is WHEN the hammer follows the bolt. In an FA FAL set to FA the hammer remains in the cocked position until the bolt carrier rides all the way forward and trips the sear which trips the hammer, firing the rifle (and so on at 700 RPM). The way to tell if it has been tampered with is to look for a sear cut and/or an auto-sear/hammer trip, or to actually fire it. The sear or cut would be visible on the bottom of the upper receiver next to the pivot pin on the right hand side. It actually pivots on the pivot pin in FA FALs. It would also be visible as a channel in the upper receiver on the right hand side with a matching channel in the ejector block when viewed from above. Sometimes you'll see perfectly legal sear cut ejector blocks installed in semi FALs- but the receiver itself should have no channel except in the case of certain amnestied Steyr import FNs. Since almost all legal semi auto FALs have an FA selector detent and selector they tend to raise red flags with the unknowing, most likely you are looking at a perfectly legal rifle. Also, it sounded like you were looking at the falfiles home page, click on the message board icon at the top and do your search in the discussion forums (use the search function/icon). |

Easy way to test your gun: MAKE SURE IT IS UNLOADED FIRST AND REMOVE THE MAGAZINE!!!!! Put your rifles selector in the AUTO position, fully foward. Pull the charging handle back and then let it down slowly, no reason to let it slam home. Dry fire your rifle. With your finger still depressing the trigger all the way pull back the charging handle and let it down very slowly. When you've let the bolt down fully foward and it finally seats if you feel/hear the hammer drop then your gun is firing in full auto. If you have to let go of the trigger for it to reset properly then it's a semi-auto only. The parts contained in a fully legal class 3 FN/FAL that are different/in addition to a normal rifle are: Full auto ejector block Safety sear Full auto trigger plunger Sear cut upper receiver |
Don't leave out the sear-cut "G-Series" Browning imports or the Katsenes imports. Both of which are very rare. www.falfiles.com/forums is the best way to get there. You will have to register to get in. |
