I know I know its been asked a few thousand times but how do you properly adjust your gas system. Do I haft to adjust it ever time I use different types of ammo and how will I know what it need needs to be set at. Like if the SHTF and I havent had time to fire it at the range to set it am I SOL just popping a mag in and epecting it to go. |

I've never had a problem with my default adjustment of a FAL...click down until it functions reliably, then click down two more times just to make sure. I've only shot surplus in mine though (Aussie, SA, etc)... YMMV. You could close it off entirely, but it'll accelerate wear of the springs and other parts, and if you have a shoddy piston, it may bend it. |
| Assuming you're using milsurp or 150gr ammo I would start with the gas system at the middle adjustment, and fire single shot opening up the gas system until the bolt dosen't lock back after each round. Then fire single shot closing off the gas system until the bolt starts locking open after each round. The give the gas system two more clicks closed. That should be the 'correct gas setting for most 150gr ammo. You shouldn't have to touch the gas system again unless you switch to either a very light or very heavy load. |

Minator556, All the above is correct - I'll add my $0.02...keep in mind that a "click" on the gas adjustment is in 1/2 increments. So in other words, when I adjusted my FAL, I started at fully open (#7) - my rifle ended up functioning properly @ 4.5 (bolt traveling far enough back to lock open), I personally prefered to close by 1 more click instead of the recommended 2, so my rifle is set @ #4. Don't just rely on the numbers 7, 6, 5, etc., you should be turning 7, 6.5, 6, 5.5, etc., so in a sense you have a total of 13-14 "clicks" of adjustment depending on how your gas adjustment is marked.
