I am just beginning to look into a "sporting" rifle and was curious if FAL's could be built - similar to AR's?

perfectly possible.....a little more work involved than on an AR, but easily done in a decent garage. You'll need a vise and some special tools (receiver wrench and headspace gauges)

where are you located?
The Fal is an easy build for the most part. You need a DSA receiver, a complete parts kit and the US parts to finish it. About the difficulity level as an AR build, just most people don't have the tools.
