So, I have decided to mount a scope on my home built Imbel.  I have been looking at the DSA mount.  It seems pretty decent for $68.  Is there another mount I should consider?  Also, I will be mounting a 3-9 x 40 scope.  I want to use QR rings.  Anyone know about what height I should go with (low, med, or high)?  If anyone has pics of a set up they are happy with I would appreciate it as well.

You can't go wrong with the DSA mount.  There may be others that are cheaper, but the fit and finish of the DSA mounts is hard to beat.  I've got a para model and a standard model and I like them both.

I used Med TSR 1" rings (.985" from top of base to center of ring) to mount my Leupold 3.5-10x40 scope.  It's a perfect fit.  The med TSR's would be equivalent to high Leupold QRW's (.980" from top of base to ctr of ring per Brownell's).

I have a para fal I bought with their scope mount installed from the factory.

From what I have read about them the scope mount is solid and robust but some people get mad that it marks up the areas where the screws go.

Mine lives on the rifle, I have an acog on a larue mount that lets me put the acog on and take the acog off.  So I don't care about marks on the rifle underneath the mount.

I plan to buy another one for a standard fal I have wandering around the gun safe and I will once again go dsa because I am happy with the first one I bought.

DSA scope mount is tough to beat.  I'd get the extended vesion with QD brass catcher.

Leupold meduim height QRW rings will probably fit perfectly and are outstanding rings.  The fact that they are relatively inexpensive is icing on the cake.  suggest you place Quick-Release levers on shooter's left, out of the way of the ejection port, and where the non-trigger hand can loosen them if need be.
If the scope is a tinch too low, you can always remove a little metal from the lugs atop the mount, and touch-up with some Birchwood-Casey Aluminum Black.

I think the scope clearance "challenge" will be in the objective bell area where it is over the handguards.  I tried Low TSR rings, which would be equivalent to med QRW, and they would not work.  Luckily, I had another rifle I could use the low rings on and ordered some medium TSR's that worked perfectly.  I'll try to post a pic later.

I tried to put my 4-14x50 on my FAL (DSA mount) with TPS .925 rings.  I had to remove the rear sight, and the bell (objective) just kissed the handguard.

for a 30mm tube/50mm objective, and keeping the rear sight, the TPS 1.225 and the DSA mount worked best for me.

I just switched over to a 2-12x32 on that rifle.  I had to mill out the 4 rear-most notches so the back bell (ocular) wouldn't touch.  I'm using the IOR 35mm low rings.  I sighted it in about an hour ago, and it's a much more natural cheek weld for me.  I even get to keep my rear sight because this scope doesn't have to sit so far back

Here's the Leupold 3.5-10x40 with the .985 Med TPS Rings.  I think it's about right.

well, since we're posting pics....

this is before I milled out the last 4 notches and moved the scope forward, but you can see how low it sits

Thanks everyone for the pics and info, looks like the DSA is the way to go.

I need to throw another vote in for the DSA. I've had mine mounted for about a year and it has been fantastic.

I'm using an ARMS mount on my all-Imbel FAL and like it very well so far. I have used this mount with an Aimpoint M2 and currently with a Nikon 4x scope. I switch the optics around from time to time as my needs dictate.

I plan on cutting off the tab at the rear of the ARMS mount, just enough so that I can remove the bolt carrier without sliding off the mount. I doubt I'll ever have any issues with the mount not holding zero.

The ARMS fits very tight on my receiver and I think it looks more attractive than the DSA mount and I don't have screws to come loose. It might be a little bit lighter as well, an important consideration for your FAL if you plan on carrying it around on a hunt etc.

However you can't really go wrong with the DSA mount either, it's a good one too.

There is a pic of mine with the Aimpoint in this sites FAL picture thread.

Have fun with your Imbel. I think they are some of the best non-FN, FAL's.

Cheers,

You'll want to degrease the screws and screw holes on the DSA mount and apply blue loctite before it's on for good.

I'll second the loctite recommendation
