I disassembled my bolt for cleaning a couple weeks ago.  There was something protruding through the coils of the springs.  To make a long story short, it was the buffer and I ended up removing it.  I ordered a replacement and temporarily installed the spring without a buffer.

Last week I forgot about the missing buffer and took the FAL out shooting.  I decided to pop off a few rounds and worked fine with no FTE.

I now have the replacement spring that I ordered, but it does not have a buffer.

Is a buffer required for the extractor spring?

BTW, the original spring w/buffer came from DSA.

I don't know if it will screw up the extractor, but that's how they were made and it's likely there for a reason. I'd switch it out for the replacement spring just in case.

The spring I ordered did not come with a buffer.   Does anybody have a bolt with or without a buffer in the extractor spring?

The buffer is meant to stabilize and stiffen the extractor claw.

Required for high Cyclic rates of fire, such as F/A
Dampens vibrations that cause the extractor claw to flutter under heavy cycle.
Basicaly, It helps keep the extractor claw from slipping off the rims of spent cases.

You will only find the rubber insert on metric versions. Inch pattern L1A1's do not have it installed, As they are mostly Semi Auto. I guess, they felt it wasn't neccassary for Semi Auto Use.
So, I doubt you will have any problems with it, unless you do some serious rapid fire or bump firing. If you encounter empty case stove pipes, You'll want to get another OEM replacement, As the buffers are not supposed to be removed, Nor can you purchase them seperate.

Installing a rubber buffer is a pretty common upgrade on AR15/M16's, for just the same purpose.

Rich thanks for the reply.  I've been kind of hesitant to shoot a lot of rounds through my FAL lately until I find out if I needed the buffer.  I was thinking that without the buffer the spring would weaken.  I should be find shooting semi, but I'll probably order an OEM spring to have on hand just in case.  I still feel like a dumb ass for removing it.  Now I can go back to shooting the hell out of my FAL
