A local guy has 140 rnd battle packs of SA for $50. I am really wanting an FAL, but do not currently own one or have any ammo. Considering what is going on with ammo now would I really be getting screwed if I bought about 1000 rounds from him so that I could have something to feed my purchase of a rifle in the near future. Also do you think that the prices of FAL's will drop any time soon, or maybe alot of people decide to sell theirs b/c it is getting  expensive to shoot them without any ammo around. Thanks

AIM ( a sponsor here) and Widener's both have Pakistani 7.62 NATO for around $220+ S+H.  Quality unknown, but there should be some reports pretty soon.

As far as waiting for a "cheap" FAL to show up, I wouldn't.  If someone had a problem rifle and didn't want to pay to feed it, it would be the first to go.  Most folks will probably keep their good-running rifles for a while, either waiting for ammo or because they have quite a bit stockpiled.  If the 7.62 NATO drought is really severe and prolonged, then you might see a few good rifles come up for sale.  Don't hold your breath.

I don't think you'll see the prices on quality FALs (or any other good rifle) drop anytime soon.  What I DO see is ammo prices going up, and reloading components, too.

Not trying to hijack your thread, just wanting share my findings in my region, today I went on a quest for 7.62x51 surplus ammo, for my FAL.
The majority were out & unsure of future shipments. One dealer, has raised his price from 4.95/20 rds. to 7.95/20 rds. for some German ammo, the boxes are marked MEN 87.I have 500 rds of this ammo &  it's good ammo"... But not for .40/rd.
The Score of the afternoon came when I walked in to a shop & asked if he had any S.A.,He replied "Yup,How much you need ?" I always reply,"How much for a battle pack?" (If Surplus is being bartered for.) He starts fingering his desk top calculator & Says to me "$32.00 with taxes. You must know what my next question was,as I am trying to remain calm & poker faced...I bought 6 battle pks(140rds ea.) An early Christmas gift   ...Now, I hope, I don't put my eye out.
Anyone else find any Deals of lately?...$50/140 is not a great Buy,but  the choices are limited at this time.

$50/140 rds seems pretty steep to me....but I'm still sitting on a few cases of Portugese and SA.  I picked 'em up from Ammoman.com for something like $149/1000 shortly after I got into the 308s.

I'm not liking what I'm seeing in the surplus market right now, but I have a feeling it's going to change in the near future....it always does...the only question is what will be available.

We ran out of Aussie and Hirt in the 90s, ran out of Port around '02....now the SA is drying up.  Whatever happens, find some good stuff, buy it cheap---and stack it DEEP!

+1
I'm still fining it at local gunshows for $35-$39 per battle pack. Keep your eyes open and jump on it when you see it.

Yes! Just received my phone call this afternoon from my local Sports Authority...they apologized for the inconvenience they caused me in turning down my purchase and offered the same deal to me whenever I come back next:

Winchester White Box(not q3130 though) for $5.99 box of 20. Comes out to .32cents a round :)

Should be able to get around .05cents per brass case after it is used too, now .27cents each , or save it for reloading.

I agree with Raf.  South African at that price isn't a good deal.  There are other types of ammo out there.

Also, beware any "semi" auto you find for too good of a price.  I have run into a few that have never worked well enough to be called semi automatic.  Maybe they could be called that if you consider working right about half the time to mean semi-automatic.

I agree with raf here too...

If you find decent surplus ammo at a decent price, buy all that you can...
