well, sure this has been done before, but figured i'd ask anyway anyway, just like the title says. what kind of scope in the $300 range would be good for longer range shooting (300-600 yards), but stand up to the FAL design? i'd be mounting it via the DSA mount if that helps any. any input appreciated, and as always, pics of your set up more than welcome.....

Burris 3-9X40 Fullfield II with BallisticPlex reticule. Use Leupold Medium QRW mounts on the DSA scope rail. You can use QRW Low mounts if you mill/file off a few rearmost lugs on the mount, but the medium fits pretty well. Mount rings with QD levers on shooter's left, so that scope can be dismounted with shooting hand on pistol grip. Set to 6X, and you have reticular hold-overs to 500 yds for 150gn milsurp. Other powers will serve for different bullet weights/ muzzle velocities, Burris Forever Warranty, to whomever owns the scope when Warranty work may be needed. Leupold Anti-Reflection Device will fit, must be secured by appropriate flip-open lens cover. $169 + S+H from Natchez Shooter's Supply. I have this set-up on my FAL, and am well pleased with it. If you feel the need to go further out up to 1,000 yds (beyond 600 yds is problematic on most FALs shooting milsurp), then spend $550 and get a Shepherd with ranging circles appropriately sized for your intended target.. 18" is good for two-legged varmints, FWIW. Disclaimer: No financial interest. |

The Leupold VX-III 1.75-6X I have on my DSA has held up so far quite well. The magnification seems just dandy for the accuracy of the rifle. My Bushnell 3200 however did not. My zero began to wander around the paper and I was tearing my hair out trying to really zero it. Put the Leupold on and it hasn't moved again. I don't know if it's busted or it just can't eat the repeated recoil? It's a decent scope but I don't think it likes the FAL much. So far that's my scope experiance in the land of FAL. |
| An IOR/Valdada M1 or M2 4x24 may fit your needs and can gernerally be found second hand for that price.... makes for a great combat/hunting scope but thats about it. |

thanks for the input guys, much appreciated. i guess my next question is, when scoping out the FAL with the above set ups, how high up does it put the scope? wondering if i'd have to get a cheekrest and all that stuff to be able to shoot it ok? the padded one from DSA doesn't look bad, but am hoping not to have to do anything major, as with an M14. RAF, how high do the medium rings put the scope up? still need a cheekpad? |
My FAL has the standard Steyr buttstock (not the lower humpback) so I don't need a cheekpiece. No one I've let shoot it has complained, but that may mean nothing; maybe they were being polite. Don't know what buttstock you have, nor the configuration of your face. |
I used WARNE medium quick-release rings and I think that puts me right around 2.7" above bore. A cheekpiece might be useful but I never have had much trouble without. I put a small piece of electrical tape over a little bit of folded card and that helps me place my face on the same spot on the stock each time, I can feel it with my cheek. |
+1
That's really interesting, I had a Bushnell 3x9 40mm 3200 w/firefly fail after about 20 shots on my STG58. I sent it back and they sent me a new scope for free but I haven't remounted it, I am really happy with the Leupold QRW rings... zero never wandered, but a gasket came came loose inside and you couldn't see out the scope. Haven't remounted... now I am a bit nervous.... I have a 3200 10x on a .50BMG that is just awesome, it's why I bought the second one... not sure what to do, maybe the 3x9 3200 will be sent down to a .223....... |

I'm using a Leupold fixed 6X by 42mm, with the target turrets, and like it a lot. You can shop around and get this sccope for 300-400 bucks. Since it's a Leupold, it's rock solid. I had a set of ARMS high rings from a AR project, and they work OK, but are a bit high. To the guy who used a set of low rings - how did they feel? Were they a bit too low, and would the medium been better, or was low the way to go? |
Wow think im gonna go with this setup as well. |
that's a damn fine looking FAL triage |
crap...can't see the pics. |
SHINY!!!!!!! |

+1 on the Burris Fullfield. Great glass for the money and the only budget priced glass I would ever bother with. Afther this, step up in $$$ and pick up a used Leupold off of Ebay. I prefer 1x magnification like Eotech or Aimpoint on my FALs. It is hard to find a 500-600 yard shot here in Northeast Ohio. |
Now that I got it mounted, here is the Hensoldt Z24. $375, but comes with a mount that is easily worth $150. I sold the mount within 20 minutes of putting it up for sale. Brings the price down to under $300. The illuminator is extra, however. Cheaper than Dirt sells them for $30.![]() It proved to be quite difficult to get a decent pic of the reticle with my camera. Anyhow, this is what the reticle looks like:

You kinda lost me with the mount. How does it mount if you sold the one it comes with? And what batteries does it take? |
|
It comes with a G3 claw mount (as well as a military issue carrying case, tinted lens, and cleaning kit). Assuming that you want to mount it on a FAL, then you can sell the claw mount on the equipment exchange to finance the STANAG adapter that you will probably require. If you already have a STANAG scope mount, then you won't need the adapter. The illuminator takes what appear to be common watch batteries. I have no idea how long a pair of batteries last, the sales literature doesn't say. The Z24 is a nice scope, but keep in mind that it is a decades' old design. However, I feel that what you don't get in updated features (newer designs tend to feature larger fields of view), you get in quality. |
