I've been looking at a FAL as a second purchase this summer (Toss up between an M1A and a FAL) after I get my school paid off. I know for about 1500$ I can get a GOOD m1A assembled and I hope that a good quality FAL would cost less. DSA arms is the only company I can think of that makes a good FAL (Read about it in the FAL torture test some time ago). Are there any others, for less money that make a rifle just as good?

Thanks ya'll...g'night.

For about $825-850 plus dealer transfer fees you can get a DSA STG58 rifle.  If you wish, you could check with ORF and see if they have any rifles for sale. You could buy a kit and the US parts and either build it yourself or have a 'smith build it for you.

take into account magazine costs with either one when making a decision.

Authentic USGI M14 mags can be hard to find and will cost $30-$40

Fal mags are everywhere and the market is not flooded with cheap knockoffs.  Price is $5-$10

You could always buy an Entreprise if you dont mind pulling your hair out trying to figure out why it wont feed   Of course once you get it fixed things look a little better.     Of course who wants to to be waste time fixing a rifle that should work out of the box...

I was wondering if Entreprise was acquired by hesse....

I've built 2 FAL's on Entreprise receivers. Not a bit of a problem with either of them. My newest one has STG58 laser dot mtrixed on the side and assembled very easily, and functions smooth as hell. Wouldn't hesitate to get another from them.

I traded a perfectly good AR for it.   Turns out it has a low ejector block.  It was cured by welding up the mag catch and recontouring it.   I was so paranoid I left it over length and fit mags with a file to insure a good, solid lockup.   Now it runs perfectly but should have when it left the factory.

Do DSA STG58's have Chrome barrels?

not sure.  But I dont think they do.

BTW Ive only used Imbel and Coonan receivers on my 5 builds.  I've had one Imbel "bottom out" on the barrel but I fixed that in a few minutes with a flat file on the bbl face.  Thats the only problem Ive had with receivers.  My G1 build was a real PITA to get running correctly but I built it from a REALLY worn kit so I wasnt too suprised. It had nothing to do with the rec. though. The rest of the builds have never given me any real trouble.

To my knowledge, STG-58 barrels do not have a chrome lined bore....
