i have a stg-58 pristine parts kit. i am waiting on me imbel reciever (like many others) i bought "izzy" furniture cause i think it will look cool. my question: i have the standard..what is it? 21" barrel. can a person have that cut down to 18" or so with out fouling up the timing on the gas system? do you think a israeli clone would look good with a short barrel? anyone seen one?..thanks to any that reply

There are no timing problems on an 18" barrel, front sight length maybe, but that's about it.

You will need to open the gas port. Gunplumber recomends the gas port be opened to .116, when cutting barrels to 17"-18".

THe timing would be the same whether you had that 21" barrel, or had it cut down to 5".  As for the gas port, shoot it stock sized first, then open it up a little bit at a time until your rifle works.  Some 16"'s have run with .109

It's up to you of course, it's your kit. You didn't ask for my opinion but I'm going to respectfully offer it. If you have that nice(pristine)an StG kit I'd hate to see you cut the barrel back and build it as something other than an Stg. They are widely considered to have been the best fitted and nicely finished perhaps of any of the FALs and build into truly stunning rifles. I'm just saying this from the standpoint of authenticity and future value. Have you considered buying maybe a lesser expensive Imbel kit to build into your short Izzy clone? Do what you want, just something to consider-

have to agree w/ Critter on the barrel thing.....i'd mothball the minty, matching STG barrel and find another for your carbine length, especially considering the fact that if your STG barrel has a short fixed gas tube as most do it will be incompatible w/ your izzy HGs....

often you can find a good deal on barrels with minor pitting or wear near the muzzle end which are perfect for such things. $30+/- for the thread work.
i built a 16.5" that ran fine w/ gas port at .109" (if you drill out the port be sure to protect the bore w/ a cleaning rod or dowel) but this was during the ban so no threads. 16.5 is pretty dang short tho so i put a chopped / threaded 18" barrel on it. it's my favorite.
not really a  an izzy clone, just furniture, mag release & rear sight but here's a general idea what you'll look like
16.5

18" w/ shorty stoll

FALna45, that's a killer looking 18" with the shorty stoll. SweeeT!

thanks fellas! that's my first build and i'm pretty fond of it.
coonan T1, DSA HTS & piston, alloy lower (+dustcover, triggerguard) WBBob PG.
just a few more tweaks now...i'd eventually like to swap out the FH for a MrBonecrusher type, need to dial it in with & evaluate the KNS front sight i just got for it and then i just need to get off my a$$ & get set up for phospating.

sorry for the 'jack Reddot

lee, i think your right. i will not cut the barrel down. the carbine izzy pictured is tempting though.
i looked at the pics of the short gas tube. even though my kit is a stg-58 my gunsmith said my tube is long with no spring showing. i was not there when he took the handguard off but that is what he told me. thats why i bought the israeli wood. hmmmm... i better double check on this. if i do infact have a short gas tube instead of what he tells me he sees what are my options for the israeli furniture? i would really like this on my rifle..thanks to all who reply...mark

The barrel on a kit gun will always be just that, with out the high value like an original complete FN FAL rifle or even a complete Springfield Arm FAL would have. STG barrels are not rare, hard to find items. If you've got a good one and you want cut off, do it, it's yours to build as you see fit. Not trying to slam kit guns, all my FALs have been kit guns, but by it's very nature a kit FAL has almost no collectible value. Build 'em, shoot 'em and enjoy 'em. That's what they're for. I have two STG barrels of my own in the shop now waiting on me to cut 'em down. The only barrel I'm not planning on cutting down is the G-1 barrel. That's because it has the flash hider lug as part of the barrel, no other reason. A 18" FAL is just about the right length compromise. Any longer the rifle feels muzzle heavy (with a flash hider) and flat out gets in the way, any shorter and the muzzle flash, both sound and sight is increased and long range ability is decreased to where an AR type 223 rifle would be a better choice.
