I'm putting the DSA rail system on my new Para and after removing the handguards, and the gas piston, I am fairly stunned to see that the gas tube has about a 3-4 inch gap in it. It's just wide open. All the diagrams I've seen of FAL's show one, long, uninterrupted tube. What the hell is this? About 2-3 inches of the tube is attached at the upper receiver, then there's just open space where the gas piston is uncovered. The gas tube picks up again another 3-4 inches to the gas block. How can this possibly be right? Shouldn't the gas tube be one, long, uniterrupted tube, with no visable access to the piston & spring? Can someone please clear this up for me, this seems completely wrong to me. Thanks in advance. |

This was the system the Austrians used in later production STG58's and when earlier guns when through depot. It's pretty much the same as the gas cyl on the FN49. DSA just carried it over on their guns. If you are using "open type" handguards it does present a problem. |
Correct me if I'm wrong here. If the piston & spring are exposed through a wide open 3-4 inches in the gas tube, wouldn't the potential for dirt and other things getting in to the tube with the piston be very high? It seems as though the piston & spring should be completely enclosed in a gas tube to keep it from getting very dirty, very quickly. The DSA rail system has a LOT of open slots in it. Between the rail system and the gas tube that is wide open, how could this possibly be good in any way? Why would they do that instead of providing a gas tube, like that on every other FAL schematic I've ever seen? Solid gas tube vs one with a large exposed opening? What could possibly be the reason anyone designed this? You can look through the slots on the rail system, and about 2/3 of the way to the receiver, when you look through, you're looking at the exposed piston & spring. I just can't get my head around that being acceptable. |

You would think! I'm not a fan of this type of gas cyl due to possible FOD and problems with mounting open handguards. +'s of the system------------------- ------Stops gas leaks at gasblock/cyl ------"Fixes" worn threads in gasblock ------No cyl/small parts to remove for cleaning/reBBL'ing -'s of the system-------------------- ------Not simple to replace worn/corroded cyl ------Need to align cyl with rec after installing BBL ------Exposed piston/spring-----FOD |
| I have one of thier medium contour barrels that I want to put Israeli hand guards on, but they are open at the top as was mentioned before. I have 3 options sweat out the short gas tube and reinstall a full length, use different hand guards that are not open, and last make some sort of cover to fill the gap and any gas blow by from hitting me in the face. The crud getting in the gas system piston area I would not worry about because it will be knocked out by the gas piston when fired. |
Is there an actual need to do that? Or is it simply cosmetic? |
