Of the currently available surplus, I prefer the Australian, which has been uniformily excellent ammo, and fairly recent production to boot. The Portugese surplus is good stuff too, although every once in a while you might get a hard primer (no biggie though). www.aimsurplus.com www.ammunitionstore.com www.ammoman.com www.dansammo.com All these guys are good to deal with and I've bought from them all. I shoot a bunch of surplus ammo and I have one simple rule that usually keeps me out of trouble.....I never shoot ammunition that came from a country where they piss in their drinking water. Stay away from Indian surplus, Chilean, Venezuelan, Pakistani, etc.. |
| Thanks a bunch. I'll be sure to keep the Chilean, Pakistani thing in mind! Any opinions on reloading? For the most part I've been told that unless you have time (not really), and some patience(working on it), and alot of upfront money, reloading's not worth it. |

I dont' have the time to reload, and when I can get 1K of 7.62x51mm for around $150-$200 it just isn't worth it. If you are shooting for extreme paper punching/hunting accuracy, then you can work up loads that are customized to your rifle, but with a standard military style rifle like the the FAL, I don't think it's worth it. |
| You can buy surplus 308 quite a bit cheaper than you can reload for it. Usually the cost of the propellent is the determining factor. Buying powder by the pound locally will cost around $18 a pound. You can mail-order powder by the keg, but hazmat charges take a lot of the benefit away from doing that, either. |
| Reloading was not worth the time for me. I'd go with portugesse or austrian surplus for the price. Try www.ammoman.com |
I agree with this except to say that I have also had good luck with the Venezuelan CAVIM ammo, and with the Indonesian PINDAD ammo... Most agree that avoiding Indian is the way to go, and there was a bad production lot of Chilean. Also, there was a bunch of dangerous CBC (Brazilian) surplus ammo, mostly produced in 1975, that is dangerous. |
