I have an extra Tasco Accudot red dot scope sitting around.  As you know they are excellent inexpensive red dot scope that seem to work well with semi automatics.  Not as good as an Aimpoint of course but respectable never the less.

Just for the fun of it I was planning to mount it on a STG-58.  My question is should I mount it high or low?  I have never put a scope on a FAL before so I don't know the ergonomics of sighting.

Any comments?

Hmm, Tasco Accudot - FAL 308 recoil.  Hmm.  Well, it might survive a while.

The best way to mount any optics on a FAL (IMO) is to use the DSA topcover mount and then bolt the optic as low to the bore as possible.  I'd be curious to hear how that works for you.

I put a Trijicon Reflex on mine and it works great.  Only problem is the reflex sight washes out in some light.  And anything orange disappears (?).

I'd post a photo but have no host any longer so can not.

I used the Accudot on an AR for a couple of years and it worked great.  I've seen good reviews that it should be able to take the recoil.  Anyway, I will give it a shot.  I have a DSA mount.

My opinion is to mount as low as possible, but to use quick-release mounts for the scope.
Reason being to obtain a decent and repeatable cheek weld, and to be able to revert to iron sights quickly.
With see-through mounts, one has to either use a cheek-rest in order to use the scope, or remove same to use the iron sights.
I'd rather have the scope low, where it lends itself to the greatest accuracy and no cheekrest, rather than having to fumble to remove a laced-on cheekrest.

Easier to remove the scope, if need be, than most cheek-rests.  More accurate, too.

My suggestion is to get a check pad.  If your scope is anything like the size of the Aimpoint, you will find that it sits on the high side of confort.  A check pad will do wonders for both your enjoyment and accuracy.
