I am building my first FAL.  What is the consensus for attaching a muzzle brake, silver solder or pin and weld?

Silver solder is normally preferred because it can be done at home using a MAP torch, which can be bought locally for cheap.  The MB can be removed later if need be by reheating.

I don't know of many, if any 'smiths who actually weld a MB on.  It's not normally as pretty and is pretty much permanent.

That's why I silver soldered mine. Also it was quick & easy.

The FAL crowd has the opposite opinion of the AR15 crowd.  For ARs, most recommend that you blind pin and weld over the pin so that you can always drill out the pin later.  I have done both.  I was just trying to decide which avenue to take.

Decided on a receiver "Type" yet?

That's for sure. Over here silver soldering a brake on a barrel will have the bullets flying out sideways. Over on the FalFiles they silver solder everything. SOP!

LOL!  I silver soldered a Phantom to my M4 barrel and was later told to expect the front half of my barrel to go downrange eventually.  It has not happened yet.
