I stopped by a gun shop today to see what they had.It is a small shop mom/pop.The owner had a FAL on the wall for $599.00 stg58.He said he built it from century reciver and put a new chrome lined barrel from FN,and a german parts kit.It is metric if that matters?I asked him why did he not use IMBEL reciver? He said for $100.00 more he would. He fired the gun five shots worked fine and he gives it a warrenty.Needs to be parknized.$100.00 more and no muzzle break.$50.00 for break. He has a store front and I know he has bills. Is this a fair price?? need help.Maybe trading one of my AR's to buy it.

You need to find out what compliance parts he is using, if any.  Home built rifles can be a great deal if they are done with good quality parts.  Avoid Century hammer/trigger/sear groups.

I agree on the compliance parts, try FSE or DSA if you're feeling a little spendy.  If the gun works ok with the CAI receiver, price is not bad, but consider that a complete STG-58 from DSA can be had for $815 delivered to your ffl. If you ever think you might have to sell the rifle, the resale value of a CAI gun might be less than you expect.

For about $800 you can buy a DSA stg58 with brake, fresh parke, & lifetime warranty. DSA sounds like a better deal to me.

That seems a little pricey, I've seen new CAI guns for $450-500 at fun shows.  Also a Century receiver normaly requires some tweaking to get them to function properly.

IMHO Do not buy an FAL built on a CAI receiver.  My roommate has one and it has taken me several hours of WESCOG to get it to run properly. At the very lest, check to see if it has a "unibrow" ridge and look very closely to see if there are brass marks in this area. Release the bolt handle slowly and see if the carrier hangs up at any point. Also make sure if it uses inch or metric mags and make sure they fit and don't get stuck.  See my CAI FAL WESCOG post for more info.

My buddy bought an FAL this weekend at a show:

Imbel reciever (non-gear stamped, but still typical Imbel nice).

New FN Barrel

STG parts.

Freshly parked.

Imported (built?) by CAI.  We've been shooting the heck out of it this past week with no grief.

Considering he paid $450 cash, he's a happy camper.

My biggest concern here wouldn't be the price. It would be whether or not he is a licensed firarms manufacturer and paid excise tax on the weapon. Him telling you that for $100 more he would use an Imbel reciever leads me to believe he is building these specifically for resale. ATF cracks down on him and you lose the rifle.

I'd take a peek over at the falfiles.com for some good information.

For that price you can get a very nice and LEGAL built FAL on an Imbel reciever.

Good Shooting
