I've been out of the loop on these for a while...are they decent quality shooters?
I'm looking to shoot irons...probably the 18' model. I do not have expectations of super tight groups, but i do expect some durability / longevity without trading out a bunch of parts. I have two LMT MWS 308's already and they're great...just looking for a different shooting experience. Thoughts? |

Tagged for info as well. I just ran into a friend who is offering up his Springfield MIA Loaded, #MA9222-w- Archangel stock, 4 mags, original furniture, and 100rds for $900 bucks.
I don't think he's run 100 rounds out of it..and honestly don't know much about the platform. I believe their excellent shooting guns, but don't know of any issues with them. Easy to scope? Reliability? This particular loaded model doesn't have the stainless barrel...it's an older one. He put the Archangle stock on himself, but one would be hard pressed to tell the difference from the newly released version. TIA for any info related. OP, this was some of the best info I could come up with on the M1A....YouTube - "Fear Not You Have An M1A" by Nutnfancy |

If you just want one to have and go out and have some fun shooting iron sights, go for it, it's a totally different experience especially if you shoot with a sling compared to shooting an AR-10 variant (most likely on a bipod or in a lead sled).
I can't say I shoot my M1A standard much compared to my own LMTs, I have it just so I can say I have it (same for PTR91 and FAL), but I do take it out every now and then just because of the fun factor and the feel of a classic wood-stocked gun, and it's always great to take out with newer shooters who want to try a little of everything. If you do decide you want to go for tight groups you'll have to spend some money to do it, accurizing the M1A can be a bit tricky since each gun is different and may respond differently to certain changes, its definitely a fun project to accurize one though. I wouldn't be too worried about durability, they may not be GI parts but I doubt you'll be spending much time marching through the jungle or desert with it and without proper cleaning and maintenance supplies. If you DO end up having issues with it then that's what the Springfield warranty is for, and if you have issues say 5-8k rounds down the road, well if you can afford to put 5k rounds through it then you can afford to replace a few springs and odds/ends. Some people will argue until they're red in the face that if it doesn't have GI parts in it then it's totally worthless, but if you're not taking it to war I don't see it being an issue, we have an entire industry built around firearms that don't meet USGI specs. I probably have about 500-800 rounds through mine and the only part I've swapped is the Sadlak guide and added a chrome silicon spring for noticeably smoother operation. Just to reiterate, if you can afford to wear the parts out, you can afford to replace them, and if they wear out prematurely then that's what the lifetime warranty is for. They're not impossible to scope but they don't lend themselves well to it, if you buy a good quality mount then it's not too bad but be prepared to fork some cash over compared to the cheaper options. Honestly I think the iron sights are part of the charm of the rifle, and learning to use them properly is an enjoyable prospect in itself. All just personal observations, not meant to be an attack on anyone or their preferences. |

Thank you for the input everyone...it sounds like a Springfield would scratch the itch that i have. I'll have to consider further the standard vs 18" version... Shooting irons only with the Scout is not a bad experience so long as you retain a castle nut muzzle device on the 18" barrel, and use the tall factory front sight. |

Let a friend put a few cheap rounds through my scout yesterday. He was impressed enough with the accuracy and comfort to strongly consider the platform over an AR-10 he had been considering. |
