If you want or have always wanted an M14/M1A,
The Standard is the low cost entry that needs a bit of smithing to be a top flight rifle. Average life of the barrel is 7000 rounds
The SuperMatch is the one to get if you just want to shoot tiny groups from top quality ammunition.

There is no doubt a good AR10 can shoot rings around the M14/M1A.
There is also no doubt that the M14/M1A has the best iron sights in the business.
One of the easiest trigger groups to work on, ever.

All in all a nice gun from the end of the wooden stock era.

Just for info sake, the Supermatch is going to have a much heavier weight barrel, great for match shooting but not exactly your field weight rifle.  The M14 generally has 3 weights for barrels, standard (what the army used as an issue rifle), a mid weight match and a heavy weight match.

I just don't want you to be totally surprised if you get the one with a heavy barrel and you don't like it because it's a fat heavy pig for general use.

From SAInc.

weights
std 8.8 lb, syn, and 9.3 with walnut
NM 9.8 with mid weight match
SM  11.2 with Douglas Hvy match

Heavy as all hell.  And most of the weight is waaay out front.  If you fill the buttstock cavities with lead (another pound and a half), it will balance right.  BTW, the weights listed above are for empty rifles, and no optic.

The stocks is a massive piece of timber.  On standard rifle, the stock is flush with the handguard.

If I was looking for a more general purpose rifle, I'd have opted for the NM.  But if you can stay behind it and hang the fuck on, it'll hammer.

Thanks.  Wouldn't it be nice if that was a regular thing (or even semi-regular)?  LoL!

Ha,  for me that would be a practice string.  A match string would net me something worse as I dumped the reload mag with a 6 o'clock hold when I was sighted in for center mass.

Probably should have been more specific. I have owned both a Standard and National Match. Was wondering is the SM was worth the extra money. It's going to be used for what it was intended not for deer hunting!!

30C thanks for the photo, I may have to rethink this. The loaded Standard would serve me well, cost less and could be scoped easier if I ever go that route.  Thanks!!!
