Before - Early Smith Enterprises M-14NM, steel and wood:

After - Same in a JAE-100 G3 chassis. The Vortex is just for a comparison against a some other glass I may use.

aThat scope in the second pic looks like it is mounted painfully high.. I vote for going back to the au'natural look - Wood & Steel.

I'm more of a traditionalist too.  But I try to embrace the new.  It definitely looks like it would make it more comfortable and maybe user friendly to shoot for groups.  Except yeah, the larue mount would make it kind of high for no good reason.

Can I ask how heavy that set up is?  What brand is that stock?  Would love to hear how it shoots like this too.

I put the Vortex/LaRue on just to see how that 20x scope looked and felt behind the rifle.  If I keep the Vortex I'll move to a low set of rings that will lower the scope about an inch.  I'll do the same if I move back to the fixed 10x SWFA.

The rifle, with the Vortex, weights 15 pounds. Note that the Vortex is a beast at about 35 ounces.  I'll drop well over a pound by switching glass.

Probably will feel like a .22 though.

While I'm also a 'Walnut and Steel' all you need is irons battle rifle kind of guy,
it's a nice looking piece for what it is; fixed position sniping style rifle.  Although it looks a bit
cumbersome, I understand that's what you need for that mission profile.  Not being a sniper and not likely to be able to convince the local 5-0's it's a HD rig, I'd have to pass.

I'm just hoping to take a 1.5MOA rifle and turn it into a sub 1MOA rifle.  I'm limited to 100 yards so I'm simply on a quest to shoot tighter groups while at the same time playing with different configurations.

Why in the world would someone have to convince their local police if your gun is for HD or sniping or whatever?  That's one of the weirdest statements I've heard lately.

I heard CO has taken a left hand turn, but I did not know you have to justify your rifle to the PD yet.

Wouldn't it pass for long range hunting or paper punching rig?  Are they requiring people to have an explanation for their guns in Colorado?   Is this a thing?  What is going on?

As an update, I'm going to have to switch donor rifles.  The rifle/JAE combo worked fine but this is an older Smith receiver and the right lug is thicker than the left.  In a wood stock it simply tightens the mag a bit.  The JAE is machined for current receivers where the right lug's thickness is the same as the left which is a few tenths thinner.  That thickness pinches the right side of the upper mag and makes it extremely difficult to get a mag in or out to the point I was loading through the ejection port with the mag inserted.  I'll switch to an early SA build that does not have that thicker right leg.

You can see the bottom (right side) leg is just a bit thicker:

In the JAE stock you can see the right leg (top left of mag well) extends in the stock cut-out just a bit, but that is enough to cause issues with the mag fit.

Rifle/combo shot well.  Here's my initial sighting target (50 yards) with the 10x SWFA.  First shot is high and to the right of the target with a POA on the center target.  I brought it left with the three shot string, then down for another three shot string and then fired a four shot string on the bottom right target.

I know the rifle could have shot better, I wasn't doing my job on the bench.  Distracted by the mag issue and a full range made it so I couldn't settle in behind the rifle.  I'll add a Wolff spring, a TiN piston, shim it right and add a more powerful optic (old eyes) and get the combo to 1MOA.  I think I also need a trigger shoe that H2Oman makes!

Looks like fun!  Too bad about the mag being tight.

I switched out donor rifles and received a few upgrades this week: TiN piston, wolff spring, shim kit, H2OMan trigger shoe and a coyote brown handguard to match the stock.

I have to say sitting behind the rifle doing some dry firing and that trigger shoe is the Bomb!  Heck, I'm sure that alone will bring me under 1MOA.

Here's how she sits now:
