Does anyone know the cutoff serial number for a Springfield armory LEAD DIPPED RECEIVER
A buddy has a M1 and it looks like it might be a lead dipped receiver just wanted to know.

Thought I saw an article sometime about receivers getting lead dip treatment by armorer detail in the field...when rifles were getting a quick rebuild to get them back in action. If true, there may not be a true cut off for serial numbers.

Will dig into my library for further.
adding: Bruce Canfield's "Complete Guide to the M1 Garand and M1 Carbine" , page 74
talks about many mid 1943 and earlier Garand having been annealed by lead dipping, during rebuild at ordnance depots.
M7 grenade launcher standardized on Feb 11, 1943 and some problems reported of bolt impacting receiver, causing cracking at receiver heel.

Sometime mid 1943, forward, Springfield altered steel in receiver to correct the issue.

So it sounds like earlier receivers got dipped if they hit rebuild at a depot,,,some slipped by.

Another book, by Scott Duff "M1 Garand: World War II", shows Springfield approximate production serial number range as:
June 1943- 1710012
July 1943-  1786469
So possibly when the new steel was being introduced?

Duff also gets into the shortages of materials during 1943, and how the many parts had to be tweaked, good reading.

Annealing was very speratic amoung both manufactures, not all rifles went through the treatment .My Dec 1941 Correct rifle was never annealed
