My friend just bought a NM Speingfield M1A and he's looking or a good scope mount

He is looking at Basset machine

Is that good? What would you all recommend?

Thank you

I highly recommend the Basset Machine and Tool M1-A mount.

I have a Basset and it is very good. Only thing that concerned me is that it is held in place by 2 pins and those pins are glued in place; not welded or pined or riveted. So far so good and I have never heard anyone complain about it and a lot of people have them so I'm guessing it is nothing to worry about. But seeing them glued does give me pause. Don't know how good that glue would hold up to cleaning solvent when I have to clean it.

No offense, but the M1A, and the M1 Garand, are terrible candidates for conventional scope mounting.  I got smart and sold off my ARMS mount (good kit, BTW) and now run a Scout set-up.

The Garand is terrible.  The M1A is merely bad.  Lack of a good cheek weld is the problem.  Neither were designed with scopes in mind.

Good point about the Garand being even less suited to conventional scope mounting than the M1A.

I've installed Scout-type mounts and scopes on both, and any  problems inherent with using conventional scope rigs simply go away.

I use a CASM scope mount that replaces the rear sight for mounting a scope on my M1A and one of my M1 Garands. Much more comfortable with this scope mount than any other.

Here is a M1 Garand with a HOPCO mount and a Fast Fire III holo sight

The CASM mounted rifles each killed a deer last year, the HOPCO / Fast Fire III are going to get one this year as well

I've had great luck with my SEI mount (Suing Everyone on the Internet) with my 2006 Springfield. It went right on and mounted perfectly; all I had to do was read the instructions. The most difficult part of it was tapping out the pin for the clip guide removal. I don't personally know anyone with a recent manufacture Springfield M1A that has had problems mounting a scope.

Of course, these days I would recommend the Sadlak or the Bassett.
