Was shooting my M1A, Armscorp receiver and USGI parts when I had a failure to fire. I pulled the bolt back and saw the unfired cartridge in the chamber but the bolt wouldn't come all the way back. I noticed that the extractor was out of position about 1/8". It caused the bolt to not lock up and not retract all the way.
I used a plastic end of a screw driver and tapped it back in place. Fired a few more shots with no problem. Any ideas what caused this to happen? |

The extractor leg (the round part at the bottom side of the bolt) can be a bit too long. If it sticks out from the bolt body, it can be pressed up during function and the extractor will then hit the barrel/chamber; failing to allow the fresh round to be fed into the chamber.
If the extractor leg is slightly sticking out of the bottom of the bolt body, lightly file the leg so that it becomes flush. |

From his post, I'm not sure it's an SA. He said an Armscorp receiver. Quoted:

SA is using aftermarket crap extractors. Buy a USGI replacement and never have that problem again. From his post, I'm not sure it's an SA. He said an Armscorp receiver. Ah. I saw "m1a" and assumed. |

Thanks for the replies. Yes it's Armscorp. It's a GI bolt. I assume a GI extractor. It does feel like the leg of the extractor might be ever so slightly raised, but only just barely by feel. I'll take a little metal off with some fine sand paper and see what happens.
