Get a GI cleaning kit.  It has a combo tool that will loosen up/remove the gas plug, loosen/remove/tighten/install screws (buttplate, rear sights).

If I'm at home I use a civilian cleaning rod to clean the barrel.  If I'm away from home I use the GI cleaning rod.  Lots of folks are scared of the GI rods but use it correctly and it won't harm anything.

You'll want a tooth brush, bore brush, chamber brush, patch tip, patches, powder solvent and grease and oil to complete your maintenance of the rifle.

I believe a 5/16" allen wrench is used to loosen/tighten up he front sight screw.  I've had mine come loose once in 30+ years, but it did happen.

Go to Youtube and watch the M1A videos by Tonyben3. He covers disassembly, cleaning, lubricating, reassembly as well as other tricks and bits.

For bolt disassembly using a .30-06 shell, chambered in your 7.62 Nato chamber works easier than special tools except for the garand m3a tool.  that tool is the handiest for extractor removal in my book even though it's for the garand.

That tool can also be used to dis-assemble the Mini-14 bolt.  Just use the right size 1/4" drive socket as a spacer.  Might also work on the Mini-30 bolt as well.

Thanks again guys, I think between here and the youtube videos I think I have a good idea what I'll get and need. I think the only thing to figure out is what grease I want to use seems like there is a lot of back and fourth over the web between this grease and that grease. I think I'm going to lean towards the "Lubriplate 130" form Brownells.
