Im looking for alternatives to the standard optics mount.  Do you guys have any comments on the rail I posted below?

I thought for sure I'd get a reply here.  Damn, I may have to ask the clowns in GD tomorrow.

It is made by Troy they make top quality stuff in my experience.  Looks like a good option but I like to keep the weight down on my M1a as much as possible since it is a Loaded and I have no need for rails on it.

If it fits your needs I would say you would be good to go buying it.

TROY is quality kit, but you will probably need a cheek riser with this because
optics and flip up irons sit higher than the standard stock was designed for.

What optics do you have in mind?

I havent made up my mind.  I've got a spare Nikon scope,  Eotech and some magpul flip ups too.  Also, a few of the original leather cheek risers are laying around here somewhere.   My main concern is whether or not the optics on this rail will hold zero, even after disassembly /reassembly for cleaning.  Ive got two M1As but I've always shot them with iron sights.  Here are the boys.  The one in the walnut stock is a NM and real a pleasure to shoot.

I had an Ultimak with a H1 Micro.  Then I moved over to a LER scope.

What LER did you go with?

JMO, but if you need to shoot with a scope, you should not be shooting an M1 or an M1A.  Neither was really designed to properly mount a scope and they "look" weird with a scope on them (to me).  The stock needs a cheek pad for scope use (another weird item) which needs to be removed to use the iron sights it was designed for.

The other thing is, these rifles are heavy to start with, then adding a scope makes them burdensome.

Looks like a nice solid piece of hardware, but to keep the weight down, Ultimak rail for the win.  Solid as a rock.  Now if you want a scope back towards the rear sight for the eye relief, then you will want what you posted.  And a cheek riser.

I have one mounted on a USGI converted Polytech with a VLTOR stock.  It's heavy, but that's not a prohibitive concern for me given the role I see for this rifle in my particular collection.

I also have a USGI converted Polytech with a VLTOR stock and a VLTOR cluster rail.

The Troy is lighter than the cluster rail.  I prefer it to the original sights.  I use Midwest Industries sights on the Troy and have had good luck with them.  Have mounted an shot a couple optics, haven't' settled on which one is the permanent solution.

PS. Did I mention that it's heavy.  If you are going to be carrying the rifle all day or "patrolling" with it, you might want to factor weight into your decision making.  Works for me, but YMMV.  If you go with it, there certianly won't be any qualms about quality.  Also gives you "better" options for Iron sights than original M1A IMHO.

I have the Full Troy MCS on my Poly, I love it. Shoots great and still seems pretty light. I liked it so much I bought another MCS chassis for one of my new M1A's

I would look into the Vltor CASV-14 rail system.  It isn't as high and still allows use of the excellent USGI standard sights if necessary.  I don't care for the Troy as it is too tall and you have to dump an already excellent iron sight setup for a short sight radius AR15 BUIS set.

My two cents worth.

I put one of them on my M1A to move my TA33 ACOG back where I could use it. I bought TNVC's cheekpad so I didn't have to rely on a cheekweld. In retrospect, I kinda wish I had just saved up the extra money and got a Sage stock. The ACOG is still a little further forward than I would like. If I could just shave an inch off the buttstock, it would be perfect.

Anyway, I do recommend the Troy BR. It definitely adds some weight though.
