Just got Springfield M1A, plan to sight in at the range tomorrow. I tried to follow instructions
in tacked thread on sighting M14, but I just couldn't follow what they were saying. Anyone have simple, easy to read instructions for sighting in M1A? I'm getting older and brain cells aren't as sharp as they used to be. |
| Easy approach but not perfect: 1. Center windage - 2. run elevation all the way down - 3. run elevation up 6-8 clicks to start - 4. shoot target at 25 meters/yards - 5. adjust to get impact in the x ring - 6. loosen adjustment wheels and set at 0 or you can just take some model paint and mark the elevation and windage clicks so you can return to this zero any time. You rifle is battle sighted in for 250 meters. It will be high at 100 but in the kill zone with a center of mass hold. Go to Fred's stocks and order some M14/M1A targets. |
Right click on target below and save it on your computer. Print it out with NO scaling.
Go to range. Put target 25 meters away. Center your front AND rear sight windage on the rifle. Then move rear elevation knob 6-8 clicks from the bottom. 1- Aim at ONE of the black dots and shoot a 3 round group 2- Adjust FRONT SIGHT windage so your group is vertically in line with the center of the black dot you used and aimed at. Do not touch the rear sight windage. 3- Adjust your rear elevation knob up or down so your group is on the black line. IGNORE the elevation markings for now. Keep shooting and adjusting your windage & elevation until you get your groups horizontally on the black line and vertically centered over the black dot you aimed at. You are zeroed in now. STOP Still while ignoring your elevation markings, count how many clicks you need to bottom out the sight. Write this down so you can always get back to zero no matter what the elevation drum says. Watch this video on how to adjust your elevation drum so your markings line up with your zero (much easier for you to understand and to do than reading it from me): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FIKnTPeZbKQ The guy in the video zeroed at 200m so do exactly as he did but use your elevation zero (the number of clicks up you have written down), and move your elevation drum to be on the line between the 2 and 4 lines. All credit goes to the "battlesight zero" sticky: http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_6_6/202253_Repost_m14_Battlesight_Zero.html |
