Question: If I bought a rack grade, and had the barrel replaced, would it run like a higher grade M1? Or is there something else I would need done? Thanks!

A new barrel will help only if the other parts are within spec and fitted right.  If the rifle is "running" right to begin with, a new barrel will be a good start.

I have had luck with rack grade rifles shooting ok. One now wears a .308 medium weight barrel from Warbird Customs. It started out with internal parts that were in spec and funtioning well. Now that it has the new barrel, it shoots nice and is going to get other tweaks as time and money afford.

depends on like was said, parts condition and fit.

you can have a good barrel and a new stock but if it's poorly fitted it's going to shoot all over the place especially when it gets hot.  Also a rack grade is likely to come with a junk stock with repair pins or just plain wore out/dried out that will fit loosely around the reciever.

Better off spending the $625 for a CMP Service Grade, you will have a better rifle at a better price

They aren't selling service grades til they are caught up. Just service grade specials and specials for the moment.

The grading doesn't necessarily "tell the whole story".  Its not based just on wear but also on appearance.

If you can get to the CMP South Store (in Alabama) you can ask the folks working at the store to help you pick out a gun with a good barrel.  It may be rack grade (due to appearance) and have a new barrel.

I bought a Greek return rack grade a few years back at the North Store.  It is a Dec. 44 Springfield Armory rifle with a 1953 LMR barrel.  It had and ugly european beech stock on it and the metal finish is less than complete or uniform.  It is the best shooting M1 Garand I've every shot.  I have a "few" SAs and H&Rs.  It outshoots my M1A which has a match barrel on it.  People have asked me if it is a match rifle after seeing the groups or the difficult shots I've made (distance and size of the target).

If you can get to the store pick for barrel condition.  Everything else is cheap/easy to replace yourself.  The barrel is both expensive and should probably be done by a gunsmith experienced with these rifles.

Not really.  A rack grade is determined by muzzle and throat erosion, as well as appearance.  Granted, those wear numbers don't necessarily mean it will be a poor shooter, but your information is still incorrect.  Especially the advice to go to the store.  Word right now, is that there is very little to be had at the South Store, maybe even both.
