I've always wanted a Garand, just recently moved to GA for a job so now I'm within range.  Any reason not to drive over to Anniston this weekend and buy a Special Grade M-1?

I'm not a collector so I'm not worried about historical relevance of the parts, I would just like something to keep for life that will be a great shooter.

Definitely worth the trip, but they are short on inventory right now.

Yep.  All of my CMP Garands and Carbines have been hand-picked by me.

Call and make sure they have some of what you want in stock.

Make sure you have your documentation sorted out first.

I thought about driving all the way out there, and its over a 10 hr drive for me.

Check in at the CMP forums, specifically the South Store forum here:  South Store Forum

Somebody there should be able to give you up to date info.

Go For It!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The tough decision will be 308 or 30-06.

I went a couple of weeks ago for a Special Grade and left with a Service Special Grade.  I wish I still had of picked up a 308 special grade too, but my wife would have done me in for that.

Thanks for the tips, I'll check in at their forum or give a call before I make the drive.  I believe my papers are in order, but I'll review it carefully and won't forget the ammo.  As far as caliber, I'm partial to 30-06 because it seems 'right'.  I think I owe this one to myself, I haven't bought a gun since 2006.

Like I already said, Rack, Field and Service Grades are all gone off the shelves and will probably not be restocked until they get cauaght up on orders
308 and Specila Grade 30.06 are available
They are complelty sold out of SA Service Grades even for mail order for the time  being
If you want a $625 Service Grade I would mail order for a HRA today
It will be a couple months before you will receive your rifle as they are very backed up from all the panic buyers

Minor hijack b/c similar question: If you've sent in your paperwork for a Garand (orderd Service grade HRA), once the paperwork's in, can you go to the store and pick it up before it ships? Have family in Anniston (grew up there) and might be down there for Easter.

ETA: I think M1G answered above...so...dang.

You will have to pay tax, shipping is cheaper. Can always handpick then have  it shipped. The way its sounds they may not have any in Stores by the time you make you trip

I have to pay tax regardless, so a trip saves me shipping as well as letting me hand pick.

That would be an M110.

The M11 I am thinking about is the Sig pistol.

No reason NOT to! There are a few there now but the racks are about empty! The people there are fantastic, and you can get there and back from Atlanta in less than a day. I went 15 Feb, got a beautiful service grade rifle 3 cans of Greek 30-06 , a bayonet, and made it home before I was late for the babysitter. Not much there so get your stuff in order and go. You will be sorry you didn't when you had the chance.

Sadly my day today was unexpectedly hijacked by work.  Contrary to my opinion it was, in fact, my problem that 'we need this working by Monday and it's not and the vendor left it inoperable!!!!!!!!!!!!!'.  New plan is a reschedule for this Wednesday with the lady-friend.  Fingers crossed.
