Hi all!
I will be ordering a M1 Garand from CMP very soon, but not sure which one to get. I know I want a service grade, but undecided if I should get a SA or a HRA? Fairly sure I'm not interested in a Special grade, just looking for reasons for either SA or HRA? |

I order the Service Grade HRA and except for the bolt and trigger group, it's entirely HRA. I'm thinking about replacing both of those and make it correct. Probably won't make it worth any more but oh well. Marty It seems the nicest overall condition/parts Garands are the HRA Service Grades lately. |
| I have a field grade HRA and a field grade SA from the CMP. I bought them as shooters and I'm very happy with both. I get the impression that the HRA's are generally in a little better condition but the SA's are generally WW2 era. I don't think you can go wrong with either. I've been happy with field grade but the cost of service grade isn't bad either. |

Do guy's ever trade out parst like that? Because I would like to make mine all Springfield. and though about trying to round them up to make it 'correct' I just ordered ammo today from the CMP http://i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k581/hummsale/cmp2.jpg http://i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k581/hummsale/cpm3.jpg I've got no problems swapping trigger groups with you but I would want to make sure headspace is correct before finalizing a bolt swap. Marty ETA: Now I have to get some headspace gauges. |

Spend the extra money and get a correct grade. It will be worth much more later if you decide to sell. Sell a gun.... whats that? That is a term I am unfamiliar with....
Just looking to get a nice shooter, thus looking at the Service Grades. Would really like a Winchester, but worried how rough a field grade could be. May be a case of get 2.... |

The Field and Rack Grades can be pretty rough. Winchesters cost more cause everyone wants a Winchester; however, from what I've read they probably made the worst M1s. Receivers and bolts out of spec. Bolts fitted to a receiver and couldn't be moved to another cause the locking lugs were too short. Stuff like that. Everyone I know that is into Garands have been telling me for almost 20 years if I wanted to get a Garand, get a HRA. They were the nicest. Additionally, I have been seeing Service Grades on Gunbroker and classified sections of different forums going for about a grand. So if you get it and don't like it you can sell it for a profit.
