I'm going to post this in the Precision forum. Hopefully I'll get a few more replies.
Men,
This is my situation. I want to shoot for accuracy at distance and I’ve got some extra cash. My first thought was to purchase a serious bolt action rifle and I found the Savage 10BA at a local shop for $1800.00. I like it and it’s pretty bad ass. Over the weekend I was speaking to a retired Marine who told me I was nuts for spending that much on a bolt action gun. He advised that the M1A national match that I already own would be more than sufficient to shoot up to 1000 yards with a simple stock upgrade and an ARMS18 scope mount. I don’t want to molest my beautiful walnut and stainless masterpiece in any way so I’m considering buying another M1A national match to customize for this purpose. He mentioned that the M1A would be better for engaging multiple targets quickly and was more versatile than the bolt gun.
What are your thoughts on my situation? Why are the bolt guns usually preferred for precision shooting? Is there any advantage to a bolt gun when shooting under 1000 yards? For two grand can you guys think of a better option?
Here are some pics of my current M1A so you don’t think I’m just a basement dwelling jackass.

With the target barrel, you should be able to get what you want out of it with no problem.
