What is the small protrusion below a Garand muzzle for? Referring to the small piece in between the bbl and gas tube. I assume it has something to do with the bayonet.

Are you talking about the ledge on the gas cylinder lock?

It's so a 1903 Springfield bayonet muzzle ring will fit.
