I bought a SA M1A scout squad and am running into some walls...
already have the suppressor... Using it on others also so it's not part of the problems

1. Suppressing is going to cost me more $ in adjustable parts and that kind of crap
2. Suppressing with what I've got going is probably going to cause all kinds of POI shift b/c the crown Is undoubtedly not perpendicular to the barrel then I'll have the Delta P adapter to the YHM QD then to the can...
3. Accuracy is limited compared to AR10 types even with the 18" bbl.
4. Accuracy can be enhanced by bedding, dropping it into some kind of Sage, Troy or JAE stock, and unitizing and all that junk
5. Problems arose from the ARMS #18 pointing too much downward to where I'm shooting way high even when bottoming out my reticle and I have no more adjustment in getting the mount close to level with the barrel which has me thinking one of the two is out of spec

Should I keep it or go to an AR10 type and avoid dumping so much dang $$$ in it?

Thanks for your input guys

I'm an M1A fan but if you're having those kind of problems, move onto to an AR10 and don't throw any more cash down that hole.

I'm a huge fan also, but this rifle is just not meant to be, for suppressed and scoped precision shooting

College restricts my purchasing and upgrading capabilities so I should probably just get an AR10 type for what I'm wanting to do... which is have a suppressable, accurate rifle out of the box

Your Rifle is not really compatable with your goals. An AR-10 would be better suited to what you want to accomplish.

I love my M14S for what it is, a big lug of a battle rifle, reasonable accurate, fun to shoot.

Of course, some people like a challenge...

There is a reason gun safes hold more than 1 gun. And I think you have found very good reasons to put another in there.

Soonerman, give me a holler some day and I'll take a look at your M1A and see what we can do with it at TriCity.
The bad thing with the shorter barrel M1As are they tend to string rounds when hot. It's not a good platform for a precision rifle IMO.
But I'll bet I can get it shooting better in short order.

A crown that is not perpendicular to the bore would cause accuracy problems all the time.
Hanging a can on a light barrel will probably cause more of a POI shift than a heavier barrel would.
Multiple adaptors to mount a can sounds shaky.
Accuracy should be comparable to a base AR10 with standard handguards and a standard barrel.
Sadalak sells a kit to check the receiver scope mount to see if it is mil-spec.
If the receiver clamps firmly into the stock and the stock’s front ferrule exerts some downforce on the front band then unitizing and some of that ‘junk’ would tighten your groups up without having to mortgage your house.

If I had to work with the suppressor you have I would probably go to the AR platform.
Also buying an AR set up like you need would also seem like the easy way to bypass your enumerated problems with the scout.

Agree.  I love my M14S:

But for suppressing, my AR10s excell:

Thanks guys for your input... I'm going to proceed with it and see how well she shoots and go from there... It'll be a few days before I have it all put together.

Anyone know whether or not the ARMS #18 is supposed to be canted like some of the other bases to give longer range zero?

It shouldn't be canted.

+1

Lots can go into making the M1A that was born a battle rifle into a sniper grade shooter. its up to the owner to decide how much is too much.

Soonerman, Fister has a preban Supermatch that is like new he'll sell.
I wanted that rifle bad.
We were at a gun show and some guy came in with an E2 stock in fabulous shape, complete with all the hardware and extra long web sling.
I had brief visions of putting those two together along with a nice scope and good mount.
I'd have had around $4k into it by the time I got it set up the way I wanted.
Ain't worth the cash when there are better and more accurate rigs at a much cheaper price.
You can throw a chunk of money into a "dream gun" and find out it wasn't worth the expense once you get it where you want it.
I've done it and seen it done to many times by others to not tell you to forget it.
We need to get together and I'll let you shoot my two M1As then you can decide what you want to do with yours or how you want to proceed, if you do.

Here's how much the ARMS front spacing tab is screwed downward toward the receiver to make firm contact:

Here are two rear contact points which I believe to be keeping the mount from leveling out:

Conclusion: ARMS mount will not work without removing material because the receiver is out of spec...

ARMS has to go

ETA: add pics of rifle...

Look at a Bassett scope mount for your M1A. They don't have the "tacticool" an Arms or Sadlak does but they work damn well at a reasonable cost.

send it into SAI and they'll fix it if it's out of spec

I'd build what you desire off a m14 clone, but I'd do it from scratch with a  better receiver and barrel for the project. Right now you got a crappy receiver a barrel that isn't going to cut it even when it's issues are solved. I'd pawn it and think it over what you want to do. You could go with an AR10, but where is the fun in that? I'd go with an LRB M25 and a Krieger medium weight in scout length for starters.

If she gets shipped anywhere, it'll be to a dealer, to be transferred
not gonna pursue the long ranger setup with it

Thanks guys for your input
