I just got a CMP M1.  Only ammo I could find locally was Federal's American Eagle load for the Garand.  It functioned flawlessly and was pretty accurate, but the empty cases were thrown forward about 1 o'clock or so and about 10 feet away.  The brass didn't have any overpressure signs, but most had some bad dents.

Is this normal?  I have some HXP on the way to compare it to, but is the Federal load hotter than M2?  I guess I was expecting ejection like an AR, not a rifle that sends two projectiles down range.

I wouldn't have thought about this too much, but all the op-rod threads made me paranoid.

That's about where mine goes and that's with HXP

When the case ejects, the op-rod hits it on the way forward to chamber the next round. That is where the dents come from. Forward to the right a bit is where almost all of mine pattern. Normal.

The two I shoot the most eject the empties in a pattern from about 2 o'clock to 5 o'clock with some brass going 4 to 6 feet from me and the rifle.

You are worring about nothing.

Visit any firing line where M1 and M14/M1A rifles are being fired and you'll see that most throw the brass forward at about 1:00 O'clock.
If they start consistently throwing the brass farther back than about 3:00, most experienced shooters start looking for a problem.

That's what I was afraid of.

Thanks all for the replies.
