Find a rifle with mostly USGI parts, then overall condition is important as well.
The shorter barrels require the bayonet lug to be gone so that you can get to the gas plug for maintenance. A standard length barrel could get a bayonet lug by swapping out the flash suppressor.

I like my Bush rifle, it has a 18 inch barrel and shoots as good as a full sized rifle.

Pre-ban...with a big 'ol bayo...Just b/c

Don't worry too much about used unless it has tons of round through it. And Springfield always gets cudos for customer service and warranty svc.

So your both saying go with pre ban instead of the new one.Any year  or just any pre ban is good. Theres a pre ban on the EE but it says trw parts .

Rifle with USGI parts will be worth more money due to the USGI parts getting hard to find.
Newer Springfield rifles are ok and come with a lifetime warranty....both with and without the important bayonet lug, depending on model.

Used with all USGI parts $1700-$2000. With all but a couple USGI parts? $1500-$1700. With just a GI bolt and maybe oprod? $1200-$1500

TRW parts are USGI.  Some think they are the best of the GI parts.  I was never sure why.

TRW had the best record of producing quality parts. However, parts from all the M14 manufacturers had to meet military specifications or they would not be used (and paid for). IF you were planning to buy stock in the company back then, TRW would have been your best choice. As far as any parts were concerned, you were equally good with any manufacturer whose part(s) were inspected and accepted.

Personally I wouldn't pay more just because it had Gi parts, but they are more desirable. The major reason for me, is the probability with the preban rifle of having a pretty nice receiver. You'll have to look into the serial number range of the better ones. That info is posted all over if you take the time to research it and compare with what you're looking at.
